The Loop | Dubai - 93 km Sustenaible Urban Highway.
Dubai is planning to build an urban corridor dedicated only to pedestrian and bicycle traffic. The 93-kilometer-long glazed canal was designed by ORB - a global leader in developing sustainable cities.
The aim of the investment is to shift urban mobility in Dubai from cars to bicycles and pedestrians.
Dubai wants to organize life in the city in such a way that it takes 20 minutes on foot or by bike to catch most everyday affairs. It is also intended to revive neighbourly contacts.
Plans assume that by 2040 year 80% residents will not need a car on a daily basis.
The construction is to be made of biodegradable materials and be energy self-sufficient. The structure will be powered by kinetic energy generated by pedestrians when walking and running. The sidewalks will be made of flexible material recovered from old car tires, bending under the feet of pedestrians and generating thus energy on a magnetic basis. The space inside the corridor will be filled with plants as well as vertical farms supplying plant food products.

Amazing! I would love to see it live.
So do I... maybe one day...
I wonder if you can ride electric bikes there?
I think so, because why not?
93 km??? A long way.
On foot I can not manage so far, but by bike - no problem.
I hope some countries may apply this project also..switching to more greener type of transport..
It would be really nice.
Thank you for sharing!
Here's some thoughts:
93 kilometres of undulating glass tunnel? Pie-in-the-sky mega levels of unfeasible. Much like 'The Line' idea... why is it necessary that it be walled and closed in along its entire length? For the rendered video, of course. The concept is alluring and fluffy, and would disintegrate much like an ocean wave crashing hard upon the rocks of reality — if it were ever attempted. Aspiration is wonderful and beautiful, but this is delusion... Entirely hypothetical.
If the goal is for Dubai to move away from car-centricity, we already know how that's done; the solutions exist and don't require glasshousing on an unattainable scale.
This is a product of the human mind and 3D modelling software... Ambition unburdened by the real. Pure ideation.
