The true cost of digital money [EN/PT]

The digital world is becoming increasingly present in our lives and, with the advancement of technology, we do not even notice that things that were once so common are simply ceasing to exist and being recreated as binary code. Documents are being digitized, friendships reduced to social media, communication carried out through apps, entertainment consumed through platforms, and money, perhaps the most important thing of all, is changing its form. Money is now nothing more than digital numbers. What is the true impact of this on our lives?

Here in Brazil, there is something called Pix. It is a bank transaction system, very similar to what we use here on Hive. In fact, this system is essentially a copy of the blockchain system. We make thousands of transactions and, because it is such a fast, cheap, and secure method, it became popular very quickly. This popularity is very positive in some ways. Any merchant accepts Pix, you can do everything using your own cellphone, and the payment can be made through a QR code, a key, and so on. It is truly practical. If you need to pay someone, send money to your family, or use any of its other features, here in Brazil, you are going to use Pix. It seems wonderful, and it is, until you look at it more closely.

The most irrelevant problem, something anyone can notice, only affects businesses or services that have not yet adapted to this model. Despite becoming so popular, there are still one or two places that resist this change. For example, paying for a bus ticket can only be done with physical cash, and this is a weekly problem for me, since I need to withdraw money to give to my son so he can get home. It is a lot of work to have to go to an ATM to get physical money at a time when everyone uses digital money. Depending on the time, you may not be able to do it. You can try asking someone you know. You make a Pix transfer, but almost no one has "real" money anymore. It is only a matter of time before the most "resistant" people and businesses adapt, or the future will swallow them whole.

So, having physical money now seems to be nothing more than an emergency necessity, because at some point you may indeed find yourself in a more "archaic" place. Your digital means of payment may fail, your cellphone may run out of battery, freeze, or the system may go offline. But these are only superficial negative points. There are things that are truly concerning and, to me, the possibility of a digital collapse, a security failure, or even state control are things that could compromise our assets, our freedom, and our access to what is truly ours, in addition to creating a perfect way for the government to monitor us.

Think about it. Here on Hive, we have the possibility of verifying every transaction. It is something very transparent and an interesting way for the platform to be truly trustworthy. But we are decentralized and the proposal is different. Even so, we can get a brief idea of the power this represents. Imagine putting all this information into a centralized system and, even worse, creating a massive dependence on a country's entire transaction and economic system, the most widely used means of payment, until physical money actually disappears or becomes increasingly restricted. Yes, we already have restrictions regarding physical money in some aspects. How concerning could this be? Very. We are increasingly being monitored and placed in the hands of the government. At what point will we be controlled? That is the question that should really be asked.

The fact is that Pix operates here in Brazil in a way that is completely connected to your identity, since it is through banks that you obtain an account, and the bank needs to register basically everything about you. So, the government monitors your purchases and your transactions, knows the places you visit, knows what you eat, and knows whether you are sick when you buy something at a pharmacy. Of course, you can change the way you do things, withdraw the payment that was transferred to you through Pix, and use cash to preserve your privacy, but I am sure that this will only be possible for a limited time. I also doubt that, in the future, companies themselves will continue using payment methods that are not digital money.

So, is digital money convenient? Yes, very much so! But does this convenience come at a very high price? Is it really worth having all this usability, speed, and "security" in exchange for being completely monitored? Does this dependence not make us easy targets for manipulation? Is it really worth leaving all this power in the hands of the State? And then, when will we finally be controlled?

So, this is something to think about. This is how things are here in Brazil, and I am certain that this model will soon be adopted by every country, if some of them are not already in the process of adapting to it. Do you know why? Because it is everything they need. For those who understand and support them, cryptocurrencies will be an independent alternative capable of bringing us a little privacy and independence and perhaps, because of that, we can feel a little more relieved. But we need to stay alert.

Everything has its pros and cons and for Ghana, I know we are not even closer to being ready to go fully digital.
