The Science of Strengthening Your Immune System

Everyone aspires to live a life with a robust immune system. It's a common pursuit, driving many to scour the internet for health advice. However, the challenge lies in the fact that such advice varies widely, and not all of it is rooted in factual information. Thankfully, you've come to the right place for reliable guidance backed by evidence-based insights. In the Stemsocial community, we prioritize facts over hearsay. It's important to note, however, that while I will be providing valuable information, this should not be misconstrued as medical advice. If you're seeking medical guidance, consulting your physician is paramount. Let's delve in.

Our body is made up of different types of cells in a complex network, working together to protect our body and help of survive but while we are looking for how to boost our immune systems, it is important to know that an overactive immune system can result in problems like allergies, autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis, and Asthma. Don't worry, you can find references to that at the end of the post.

Improving the immune system does not leave the gut microbiome out. You must have heard about fibers but not taken it seriously. Well, fiber supports the gut microbiome which is a collection of microbes in the gut that help to break down food, remove toxins, and help train the immune system to fight off infection as they act as a primary defense barrier against diseases. Microbiomes also produce vitamins such as vitamin K which helps improve the functionality of the immune system.

Living healthy has a lot to do with what you are ingesting into the body, and studies have shown that alcohol suppresses the immune system as well as reduces the amount of good microbiomes in the gut. Not like that's all, alcohol can get you dehydrated, as well as mess with your brain neurons causing neuro-immunological changes as well as irreversible brain injury.

Exercise is often overlooked but holds significant importance. A study published in the JAMA Network found that just 20 minutes of exercise can reduce the likelihood of falling ill by about 20%. Moreover, individuals who regularly take cold showers are approximately 29% less likely to call in sick compared to those who don't. Adequate sleep should not be underestimated, as it enhances white blood cell activity and antibody production.

Let me state this that unless you have vitamin C deficiency, you do not need to get vitamin C supplements if you eat a healthy diet because the body doesn't store vitamin C, rather it is removed as waste from sweat or urine. Although when a person has common cold, taking vitamin C supplements can help reduce the duration by 8% in adult and 14% in children but taking too much can also lead to having Diarrhea, Nausea, and Kidney stones.

While we talk about vitamin C, let us not forget vitamin D. Vitamin D is a steroid hormone and not a vitamin. It promotes the absorbtion of calcium in the body, so when a person has low levels of vitamin D, they are succeptible to autoimmune diseases and respiratoryt infections. It is important to know that only about 10% of our daily required vitamin D is gotten from diet, while our major source of vitamin D is the sunlight. While it is important, excessive intake of vitamin D would lead to calcium buildup in the body, damaging the kidneys, lung, blood vessels, and heart.

In our quest for a fortified immune system, knowing what we need to do is very important, trust me when I say that there is no short cut to staying healthy. It is important that we make choices that empower our bodies' natural defense mechanisms, ensuring a healthier and more resilient life.

Sure. It is important that our immune system is functional and healthy, but then having an over active immune system is what is responsible for allergies and lots of autoimmune diseases.

The micronutrients including the vitamins, fibers and essential amino acids are indeed critical for a good immune response.

Thanks for sharing :)
