Technophobia - A Tiny Bit of Setback For Technology Evolution
Before you say, another phobia? This one was inspired by a scene I witnessed. I knew immediately that it was some phobia the woman had and I had to research on it to come up with this content. It's really surprising to see people have phobia for what seem like the whole world would love and want to have for themselves.
Well, phobias aren't always there, situations birthed them and as I've researched, they are like traumas and reaction to a memory of something that had happened in the past.
For this content, I'll be sharing my thoughts about this tiny setback that technology has as it evolves year after year.
Before I go on about technology evolution and this setback, I'd love to explain what "Technophobia" means as it is a foundation to what I want to share.
Technophobia is a phobia or fear of new technology. A situation where one reacts very unlikely to the sight of new phones, computers, electricity or any form of new technology.
A short story to explain this phobia... An old lady I spent some time with some years ago, she screams with so much fear whenever my phone rang and it led me to having my phone on silence all the time I was with her. I couldn't even let the phone make any sound, like play music or have it on a loud speaker when I'm on a call close to her.
She was like "How can that tiny thing be talking like my daughter" when I was on the call with her daughter 😅 It may not had been a serious phobia but up till the last time I heard from them, the old lady has refused to own a phone of hers and contacts her children through others who have phones.
Well, it's quite understandable that she is old and very much used to the old and outdated ways to communicate with people. She still has all the old stuffs in her house with very few tech items, too few that you wouldn't notice their existence since she never uses them.
There are more cases of people afraid of the fast evolving technology due to one reason or the other.
How is this phobia a tiny setback for technology evolution?
From era to era, technology evolves to what it is today and we have more people who appreciate these changes than those who doesn't. The reason for some not to adapt to these changes are quite obvious but it doesn't mean, the evolution won't continue. And that is why I say, it's just a tiny bit of a setback.
This tiny set back is that, a few people won't get to explore the amazing features of the evolving technologies and that would also mean hidden potentials go to waste as they would never find out that they have some talent with evolving stuffs like technology which they could find as they explore.
The limitation may not harm technology in anyway but having no such limitations would be a good boost to how far these evolution can go. This phobia is most common with older people but also people with anxiety disorder or afraid of the future can also have this phobia against new technology.
The symptoms some people show could make anyone think they have technophobia and some of the symptoms are: Like I shared about the old lady, here are more symptoms to look out for to know who has this phobia.
The person avoid getting a new computer or phone. (They'd prefer their old devices).
A lot of them criticize new technology or changes. (the major tiny setback).
Refuse to use computers, ATMs or card readers. (Some can't learn to use them anyways).
Resist upgrading a device’s software. (The ones who succeeds to have a device fights getting an upgrade).
There are more symptoms that could associate with this phobia but these are quite obvious especially the second one. They tend to not see any good in technology to want to use them. And some even affirm their fear when they witness a wrong reaction of technology on humans.
There is a way out of this setback (phobia) but a slow process.
Like every other phobia and some trauma, it takes time to get over it. Considering the fact that there will be more changes with technology in time, it would mean them trying to adjust every time it happens and so the process is slow for them to overcome this phobia.
There are a few ways I could think of that would help them manage this phobia until they have it no more. Of course, I'd say to have a technology related phobia go away, technology is needed.
Here are a few ways to share with any with this phobia.
It's important you take your time and don't feel any pressure to learn about any new technology.
Focusing on one device at a time is also of a great help. Don't force it to cope with all at once.
Asking for help from family, friends and maybe experts to guide you into finding positives with tech items.
Technology has come to stay and not even phobias can stop it but it is best to put solutions to the phobia for maximum acceptance of technology evolution. I'll stop here and give room for contributions and thoughts on this.

My aunt has a phobia for technology, she has refused to use an android phone. They managed to get her a button phone, but it's more like for decoration in her house.
Sometimes they feel things like this has so many negative impacts on people they dont even want to see it.
Just like you said, none is born with a phobia, we all develop it at some point in time, due to some things we've witnessed and experienced
Lol a decoration is the right word to use there, it's really funny.

I also have the habit but I don't have any technophobia. I won't get a new computer or phone until my current devices are working perfectly otherwise it will be a waste of money.
The evolution in technology is inevitable and we can't avoid it. It's better to adapt to it because there will be no escape way for it.

Yeah, that's different
You are just saving cost as tech items aren't as cheap as things were in the past.

Digital divide has continued to exist between the rich and the poor, educated and non educated, males and females and so on. I think it will continue to exist as long as new technologies keep coming out. However like you have outlined the possible solutions, one needs to move on with the new economy. Funny experience you had there, Sis.
