Basic Guide to FreeCAD Draft Workbench


The development and editing of 2D objects in FreeCAD is the main focus of the Draft Workbench. The global coordinate system’s XY plane is not its only boundary, though. Its objects can be positioned and oriented in any direction in three-dimensional space, and certain Draft objects can be plane or non-plane.

Similar to how Inkscape or AutoCAD can be used for general drafting, draft objects may also be used for that purpose. However, they can also serve as the starting point for making 3D objects on other workbenches. A Draft Polygon can be extruded with Part Extrude, a Draft Wire can describe the course of an Arch Wall, etc. Numerous Draft modifier tools can also be used on 2D and 3D objects produced by other workbenches. For instance, you may build a Draft Ortho Array from a Part object or move a Sketch.

In order to precisely control the location of geometry, the Draft Workbench additionally offers tools for defining a working plane, a grid, and a snapping mechanism.

FreeCAD might not be the best option if your main objective is the creation of intricate 2D drawings and DXF files without the necessity for 3D modelling. Instead, you might want to think about using specialized software for technical drafting, like LibreCAD or QCad.
