What is MaaS? Mobility as a service/¿Qué es MaaS? La movilidad como servicio

I have already commented on this blog as those of us dedicated to computing, for years we have been familiar with the concept "aaS" (as a Service) of both software and hardware, basically this means that instead of being owners of the goods or services we can also enjoy them through a subscription.

Under this concept we have seen how large software companies such as Microsoft offered access to their applications through a fee per user or even rented virtual hardware spaces through the use of the cloud. Now the advancement of technology allows us to extend this concept to other areas of our daily life.

People who live in big cities spend a lot of their valuable time commuting to their various occupations, be it stuck in traffic jams or waiting for public transport when we have to make a change, not to mention the costs of maintaining one or several private vehicles.

For this reason, MaaS (Mobility as a Service) is gaining popularity in cities, which aims to free travelers from all concerns, all they have to do is say where they want to go and a specific application will take care of searching, among the different public and private options, the one that best suits the traveler.

At the moment, as far as private transport is concerned, we have to go to car sharing companies that, for a small fee, make vehicles available to us for specific uses, but in the not too distant future artificial intelligence and autonomous vehicles will facilitate the extension of this service at a cost that can be assumed by all.

If we do the math, we will see that owning a vehicle is a waste of money for a vehicle that is stopped for an average of 20 hours a day, that takes up space and has a high maintenance cost. Through the use of this system, three quarters of current vehicles could be removed from the streets, which, in my opinion, would be a great benefit for all urbanites.

Car sharing is great but after some time of experimentation I come to the conclusion that it is much more convenient to have your own car if someone can afford it. First of all, it is easy to leave something in a borrowed car. A phone, a charger or some shopping. In addition, each of us has things in the car that are always useful. For example, a spare charger, additional cables, headphones, a second pair of shoes, jacket, sweatshirt or an umbrella. Car sharing works great if we fly somewhere far away and use a rented car on the spot, or if we temporarily need a different car than the one we have to, for example, transport a fridge or furniture from Ikea. But I, for example, rarely go on long distances, so I have a small city car on a daily basis, and occasionally for further trips I rent a larger, more comfortable car.
