As you all know, the main difference between classical computing and quantum computing is based on the fact that, in classical computing, the bits that are the minimum unit of information can take values 1 or 0 and the qubits, which are the equivalent of the bit in quantum computing , they can take both values 1 and 0 at the same time.

Quantum coherence is the period of time in which the qubits remain in this superposition, when due to some external disturbance this quantum coherence is lost, the qubit collapses in one of the two values 1 or 0, becoming a normal bit, in what is called decoherence.

To achieve this quantum superposition, it is necessary that the qubits be in a so-called coherent state or state of quantum coherence, which is how it is called, not only do the qubits need to be cooled to temperatures close to absolute 0 (-273 ºC) but also any disturbance of any kind, however insignificant, breaks this coherence.

When we talk about disturbance we are not talking about an earthquake or a kick to the computer, a change in temperature of millikelvins or a simple particle of cosmic radiation can end with coherence.

With the tools that are used today it is extremely difficult to maintain this coherence beyond a few millionths of a second, which is why it is so difficult to develop a real quantum computer.

A few days ago a team from the University of Chicago announced the discovery of a system to maintain this coherence for 22 milliseconds that, although it is a short time to make love (even for a man), in that time light can travel from Madrid to Moscow and return.

To achieve this they did not try to eliminate the disturbances but rather "tricked" the system into believing that there is no noise, manipulating the spins of the electrons with electromagnetic pulses.

There is no doubt that this could be a breakthrough for quantum computing, although there is still a lot to develop experts compare it to the situation of classical computing in the 1950s, when computers occupied an entire room.
