Questionable Utility Of Silicone Rollable Keyboard

Is this my most useless purchase this year?

Though it’s not a full year yet but so far, the nominee of being my most useless purchase of the year goes to this silicone rollable keyboard. I can’t fathom why this product exists at the market as though it may seem convenient and promises innovative problem solving such as portability and spill-free, it comes with several drawbacks. In this post, I will be reviewing a K-One rollable silicone keyboard.

Personally, one of the most important features a keyboard should have is a typing experience and this rollable keyboard is deficient of that one. Though I have to say, I purchased it because it was an emergency case but let’s expand on that one in a bit.

While I was traveling the other week, I forgot my logitech dongle which helps connect my wireless Keyboard MK240 from logitech. I’ve been using it for a while now and I love how reliable and the clanking sound that it makes. Though at times, it definitely can get noisy especially when I was working in very quiet places. The MK240 keyboard is my lifeline and has a great typing experience. It supports the way I type which is quite fast and I expect no delays. When I noticed that my dongle was at home, I panicked and wanted to come home quickly as I had something to do on my laptop. Since I was far away from home, I reckon I’d just find a computer shop where I can find a cheap temporary replacement for my keyboard. I was hoping I could find a product from Votre or even Mikuso which are both available through USB connection and are always under $7 which was the budget I was willing to spend for a temporary solution.

So, in the middle of nowhere, I found a computer shop and repair shop that apparently sells keyboards. I told him to get the cheapest keyboard he had and eventually he looked for a keyboard in his dusty shelves. He ended up finding me a rollable silicone keyboard. I never like a silicone keyboard because in terms of typing experience, they’re pretty terrible. But I had no choice and since it was the cheapest at that store, I went with it.

The keyboard has a massive caps lock with a strange placement of the caps. There are two shifts located adjacent to each other which was annoying. You also have to punch it really hard in order to be able to type something and there are delays here and there. But as long as the enter button works, that’s all I needed at the time. It certainly works but I really had to punch it a few times before it was properly functioning. Aside from the fact that this keyboard looks pretty old, I had to straighten it first and make them lay out evenly. It took a while for the keyboard to be straightened and where I can use them properly.

Luckily, it fits just fine on top of my laptop which is a big bonus since I would not need an extra space just to use it. Although, I was still pretty disappointed with the fact that this keyboard is barely functional and I won’t really use it other than a few emergency times in the future. And I still have no idea why people would genuinely want this type of keyboard unless a special case like I had, an emergency one.

This is one of those ideas that while it looks good on paper, the implementation leaves much to be desired. It is quite a technical feat to put working electronics in a rollable pad of silicon, but given the poor performance and alternative options, it sounds like it's not worth it. I got a tri-foldable keyboard, which is cramped with questionable key placement, but so far I'm enjoying it for light tasks. I might do a proper review once I put it through the paces. Great to read about your silicone keyboard, even if it didn't work out well.

I saw those proper tri-foldable keyboard, they look pretty decent and seems like it's worth it. I am all for portability but so far, there are only a few that is pretty satisfying such as the keyboard from Logitech. Even so, they're still relying on battery and it's a bit chunky. Maybe one day we'd have invisible light portable keyboard like we've seen in Sci-fi movies. And please do a review ASAP, it might convince me to hunt for a trifold keyboard.

I'm enjoying this foldable keyboard. Some people have had different issues with it, but the one I have hasn't shown any problems so hopefully the issues were resolved. I think the two biggest issues that I've encountered so far is the cramped layout of the keys, and the placement of the apostrophe key. You have to get used to both. The small surface area is expected and easy to adjust to, but I'll probably never reach the same speed as with a regular size keyboard. The apostrophe placement is a bit annoying because I keep hitting enter instead. So I have to readjust my thinking when using it.

The great thing about this keyboard is the pad on the right side that allows you to move the mouse around so you don't really need a mouse. It also recognizes multi-finger gestures for scrolling and other functions. It is a Bluetooth keyboard so no bulky batteries, and you can set it up with up to three different devices.

The size is small. Here's a picture of the keyboard in the little poach it comes with.

Very small footprint! I've been using for light work so it might not be ideal for heavy work. I will be taking on some trips coming up, so I'll get to truly test it then, but so far I'm happy with it.

I agree with your experience, since about two years ago I made a purchase of a roll-up keyboard very similar to yours to manipulate a raspberry pi microprocessor, after that I do not use it, I have it stored there. But I have the hope that someday it will get me out of trouble, since for daily use is discarded by its hardness.

hahahaha see, I am sure a lot of other people resonate with us. It's just unpractical for a daily use and unless it is an emergency, I don't advise anyone to get it. Maybe you'd need it when it's time, so finger crossed it's working when you need it.

Well, it's like you say, for an emergency it works. I once had a similar one and my cat destroyed it, since then I haven't bought anything like that...

At least you already have your useless purchase of the year hahaha... I bought a lining for the case of my wireless headphones... does it qualify as a useless purchase?

hahaha it looks cute but why would you get an extra case for it? I wouldn't really say it useless if you're going to use it all the time but as for that kind of keyboard, it's pretty useless xD

Honestly, I never knew this type of keyboard existed. The last time I bought a keyboard for my laptop, what I saw is just wireless of the usual that are attached on the desktop.
Though I prefer wireless as it small enough and fit on my bag.

The one you bought could be near to disposable.

Though, at least it still helps 😁

They use to be very popular back in the day and comes with different colors. I never understood why people would want to buy them but a lot of my classmates did. Nowadays, it seems that small mechanical keyboards & wireless are more preferred which is understandable. And as of that keyboard, it'll barely see the light of day haha

Haha that's explained, 😂 I didn't have a laptop when I was studying nor in the past years.
Just bought when I felt so bored last pandemic and when I started this blogging for pastime.

I think these keyboards are the worst things that have been invented, as you say, one of the relevant points of one of these devices, is that it provides a fairly comfortable user experience, I would say that the feeling with one of these, is so depressing, that only the fact of writing, lead us to think several times if we want to do it, definitely one of the last things I would buy, although it is economical, does not meet any level of satisfaction, hopefully someone read your post before trying to buy one, I hope you do not abandon your logitech again.

right? it's pretty depressing though it's economical, it's just fairly useless. I hope it's the case but I am surprised that it's 2023 and silicone keyboard still exist :D
