Not sure how long this is going to last

When I was in Thailand, I know one thing that my laptop age is going to be quite short but I didn't expect that it would be shorter.

From yesterday, I found out that my laptop won't turn on which was a nightmare for me. I mean, who doesn't? I am sure if that's your lifeline, you'd probably worried too.

So, I did what I can to fix it on my own. I know my way around it and with a little bit hardware how to from youtube, I am usually able to fix it. The problem is, I am currently away from my repair tools which made the whole ordeal became a lot more complicated. I ended up asking for my mom to borrow tools from my uncle and trying to find the tools that my dad had. I ended up finding screwdrivers and thankfully some of them were small enough to open screws for mobile and laptop.

My current laptop is Asus vivobook. Though I love how nice it looks and its keyboard including its performance. I just found out that isn't as easy to repair as HP, Dell, or Lenovo or even Axioo.

Apparently, some of my friends and people I know reported that their Asus just suddenly won't turn on and that's the end of it. I don't want it to be the end of my laptop, not until I am moving back home and getting a lot more settled. So, I am even more motivated to fix it.

What I did to troubleshoot it was with turning off the laptop and holding the power button for a couple of seconds. This method worked at first but then, after I left home for a morning run, my laptop won't be turned on. I panicked and after trying the same method, nothing worked until I suspect that I might need to resetting my bios or cleaning up the inside of my laptop which were fairly dirty and needed a good clean. I mean months of wandering, on the road, office is anywhere. This laptop has had its fair share of exhaustion.

Opening the inside part of Asus was not as easy as any other laptops that I repaired in the past. There are just a lot of screws that you have to carefully take off.

  • First you have also have to carefully unplug the keyboard and the mouse cords.

  • Then, more unscrews await as you try to clean the fan and unplugging the rest of the parts including the motherboard.

I didn't get to the part where I unplugged my battery because I don't have the correct screwdriver size for the last part of the screws nearby it.So god knows if what I did was going to last longer than a day.

After cleaning all the parts, the tricky step is putting everything back on and eventually trying it again. I tried to attach and reattach the keyboard and mouse cable more than once until I finally able to power it through again. It was on.... just not in the way I wanted it to be.

The laptop was stuck in the bios menu and until I tweaked some of its security features, I ended up booting on my linux again. This laptop runs on linux which is why it has extra steps compared to when it's windows installed. But in the end, I could pick my kernel again and voila, it's turned back on.

Just to make sure that i'll turn on again after this simple tweak, I turned the laptop off. I powered it on again, and it was working! Finger crossed that it'll last until the next few weeks 😬. This makes me think twice of Asus as though it looks decent and has a great performance, the repair is just quite a headache. Have you got any problem with Asus before?

Looks at the tweet related to this and laughs. Then realizes my laptop is an Asus now I pray it doesn't break soon. I like the part where you had to go through several steps just to trouble shoot. Reminds me when my laptop breaks and I'm left to watch some Indian IT solutions on youtube to figure it out. It's moments like these that raise confidence on making laptop repairs a side gig.

The part where I have to open the whole casing is why I haven't replaced my keyboard. It's just a lot more hassles than older gen and other laptops. I just hope yours won't break soon cause from what I've seen today, a lot of Asus model has an inbuilt battery and good luck removing bajillions of screws 😂. PC monkey is where I go to except the camera angle is shit, otherwise, it's all good and their step-by-step makes more sense.

Is it a newer one? or one of Vivobook model?

Personally I don't have experiences with problems on Asus laptops, but from what I know they are more "delicate" so that naturally increases the difficulty of repairing :) but luckily it seems that they are still using standard screws to hold their devices together, which is a good thing. Looking at you, Microsoft and your glue.

My old laptop which is a HP just recently died (a motherboard problem, so we're not repairing that...), and I got myself a Lenovo. Hopefully this one lasts! I was able to migrate my SSD over to the spare SATA port in the new laptop too. Gotta appreciate how they are still giving us some free slots (including on RAM slot) even when it's quite clear that they are soldering most things onto the board to save cost. It's a rather cheap laptop after all.

Lenovo , Dell and HP are my go to these days. I forgot why I went with Asus at the time, probably because I wanted something new. And... now I learned something new about it as I am used to HP, Axioo and Lenovo more than other brands. You're right about them being delicate, I mean.. I was sort of afraid this laptop has to retire just because I didn't put everything on properly. Even now, it's not properly re-attached as I am loosing some of the screws 🤣

I'm guessing that you can at least press hard enough on it and let the plastic stuff hold itself together... At least that worked with my old HP 😂

When I'm migrating my SSD into this laptop the guy at the shop almost lost a screw as well. They had lots of backup, but fortunately they managed to spot it lying on the ground. Hope that you'll find yours somewhere too 🤣

Great that you got things working again. I am not a fan of Asus, mostly because of the power supply, but didnt have any technical issues with them. You cleaning and checking your laptop yourself, is a good example why we should check things out before just throwing them away.

🤔 I heard about this power supply problem too. But yeah, if next time I am getting a replacement, I wouldn't go with Asus, it's just too many screws to open. I also usually don't throw away laptop easily, I would recycle them and hammer what I can while saving the other usable parts 😄. I am hoping by just this simple cleaning and restarting my BIOS, my laptop would hold out for a little longer.

It can be seen at a glance that the fan cooler is stuck by dirty recommended to remove it and wash it and put oil to work is very rare to be damaged.

Yep, did a little cleaning on them and vacuumed that part. Was pretty dusty and could be why it's also problematic before.

I go for Lenovo. It's time to invest a new laptop. My old Lenovo laptop got issues being slow. It won't work when I try to open my Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom. I also got issues with the ON/OFF button with HP before. Such a hassle.

I have the same problem with my lenovo, somehow they got slower each time and though I was already installing the lightest distribution on them, they were still pretty slow. So far to me, the sturdiest would be HP, I have mine for more than 10 years still works and it had been through numerous accidents but I only brought it once to repair the screen and that was it.

my current issue with my new Lenovo is the screen because the kids broke it. and I haven't fixed it. i am using an external LCD now. i am interested in Dell but it's expensive compared to lenovo and HP.

What a horror when computers do not turn on, it is something that I do not wish on anyone, I have been through this and I cross my fingers for not doing it. It's good, dear friend @macchiata, that you have some knowledge, and you have been able to maintain the device and finally start the system. I hope this maintenance gives your device much more life
happy start to the week

What happened with your previous computer?

In the first instance I had problems with the battery, it stopped charging, it only worked if I connected it to the electrical current, then my son forgot to connect the device, which caused it to overheat and consequently the motherboard burned, which made it not turn on anymore

I already had a problem with a notebook and needed to send it to technical assistance to repair the BGA. It must have been caused by overheating. It is always good to be mindful of proper ventilation and having recent backup.

Yes! proper ventilation is definitely important. Like mine above, it was dusty as hell and needed a good clean.

Hello mac, first I have been pleasantly surprised with your level of computing, I'm not reading many of your publications but I did not expect at all that you know how to disassemble a laptop with how difficult it is, congratulations for having repaired it.

Hopefully it will last a few more weeks and you do not have to change it for another one.

I have never really had Asus, I do have a motherboard in my Asus desktop computer, and it really hasn't brought me any problems.

Greetings dear!

I know my way around computer and been disassembling them since I was a kid. I am only going to repair shop when there's display problem and that too, my brother would usually fix it as he's a technician. I would be sad if I have to spend money on laptop soon :D I hope it never will and if that's PC, much easier to fix than laptop :D at least opening a casing, wouldn't be much of a hassle like this.

Wow it is very hard not to have such an essential tool as a laptop I also have mine that needs an urgent cleaning because I am already feeling that it has some details but as I personally do not know how to do it and I am afraid of damaging it I have to wait to gather and send it to be cleaned.

I hope you can repair your computer soon and continue with your excellent work, with more comfort.

If you're not confident and has never been opening a laptop, it's definitely best to send them to repair. There are a lot of how to on youtube but mostly if you don't have the proper tools and the confidence, best to send them to repairs :) I am mostly okay with the motherboard and the lower part of the laptop but when it comes to display, it's definitely not my forte and I would send them to repair.

Tragedy avoided and thank goodness, because in good faith I know that repairing laptops is almost impossible unless you take it to very specialized technicians or you have powerful IQ to solve the problem, these computers always give signs of death, when they just need a good cleaning to work again hahaha, I'm glad you could bring it back to life, hopefully it will continue to last long enough so you can buy or acquire a more reliable laptop soon.
