I Tried Samsung’s One UI 7 Too Cartoonish Icons

Samsung's Latest UI Update
Tech reviews

Last month, Samsung rolled out their latest One UI 7 update along with Android 15 for their devices. For those who are already familiar with the look of One UI 6 will be in for a bit of a surprise.

In this One UI 7 update, they are going in an AI direction adding some integration and AI abilities to their smartphone. But for those who perhaps don't care much about its AI capabilities will be in for another surprise as they are totally redesigning their entire environment, icon and even screen layout.

The new look on its interface

Just as you see below, the icons look more vibrants and a lot more colorful. The app drawer screen now can also fit all applications into one without having to create another tab. They can be scrolled down easily and for those who enjoy minimalist look and no frills phone, this is another advantage of this design.

However, the vibrant colors and the more rounded style of the icons are giving it too child-like design and less professional look to its entire system. So, if you’re someone who dislikes this kind of aesthetic, perhaps it’s best to actually stick with One UI 6.

Another thing in this update especially for smartphone photographers is that they added a balancer in their camera and even up to 10x zoom from its original 4x zoom. This feature for some higher end samsung will definitely give quite an edge when trying to take a macro picture. But for those on the mid-tier samsung models, the result will look too blurry. So, again this is another feature that’s quite hit and miss.

Since One UI 7 is a complete redesign, it takes quite a while to adjust to the new environment. Even for me who has been using Samsung for more than a decade, it feels like I am actually getting a new phone and trying to adjust with all of its features and newer updates.

To put it simply, everything is completely different.

Personally, while I like the update that is geared towards simplicity, it was the icons that were too loud, child-like and a lot more rounder than I like to see. It does not come off as professional at all and the phone feels like it’s a cheap, toy smartphone. However, as of the rest, I do like all the seamless experience of using my phone.

It’s like finally, a phone is back to its original purpose, just something to call or receive a call and its basic functions.

My advice would be to wait before jumping into this newer update because who knows if they are going to roll out more security patches or even redesign their icon and many things on this UI 7 and android 15 that comes with it.

After reading this, I've decided not to bother. Thank you!
I hate cartoon-style icons; it's the reason I keep my Google icons hidden in a separate folder, so I can't see them. They trigger me lol Google make great products, but using them makes me feel like a child with crayons.
Some may say it's just an aesthetic, but it matters. I still mainly use Microsoft products because their productivity tools have professional-looking icons. It makes me feel more professional and productive.

One recent update I do really like is the screen rotation update. It's now much more intuitive and doesn't need a rotation lock button. Watching YouTube in bed on my tablet is much easier now.

Hope you're having a great week, Mac :-)

hehehe I definitely regret updating them too soon but I was curious enough to explore the options. I just think that they are wrong in making the icons looking as if we're all kids. Either way, they are not for everyone and I guess after some critiques, they might re-think about that particular icon styles.

oooh I am not sure if this even available to other smartphone models. From all I know, they are specifically for samsung but great to spread some awareness about it.

I've always used Nova Launcher on Android. My biggest hatred of this latest update was the change to to the pulldown menu at the stop of the screen. If you pulled from the left, you got notification, and if you pull from the right, you get settings.

I hated that, because I have a S23 Ultra, and while I have LARGE hands, I've been conditioned to see both in the one place, and if I want to scan into my gym, I'd have to go to the right, while checking a notification, from the left, and I just found myself wasting too much time changing it with a swipe.

Luckily, when my wife's phone updated to the same version, she found a way to restore the old behaviour and I'm a less grumpy old man.

But I'm still grumpy :P

ooh honestly that pull down change is something I am a bit familiar due to using Xiaomi's UI. It sucks though because now, I don't even know if my bluetooth is even connected or such. I guess samsung is really running out of ways to innovate haha cause they are doing such minor things that just screams " Look, we're doing something new here!"

I completely understand your frustration with the new One UI 7's cartoonish icons. It's a big change from what we’re used to, and it's hard not to feel like it takes away from the sleek, professional look many of us prefer. This is one of the reasons why ui strategy plays such a crucial role in user experience. When developing interfaces, ensuring a balance between aesthetics and functionality is key. In fact, when building a product strategy, like the ones discussed on Neuronux, it’s important to understand user expectations and maintain a strong visual identity. Maybe Samsung could take a page from this approach for future updates!
