What does science say about aimless Asian Elephants?

Prescribing why species migrate is not a simple subject to evaluate or at least not when it comes to atypical behavior in certain species, for example in times of global economic crisis, many times we have heard about the issue of migration that occurs among the human species, in fact, it is not surprising that we know people probably a close relative, has migrated to another nation in search of economic solvency that allows them to balance their lives in terms of food, housing and social stability.

I give this example, because when we talk about human migration we can find points of theoretical triangulation, which allow us to understand and contrast this phenomenon of survival executed by the species, in order to maintain its dynamics of biological functioning in complete normality.

Now, in the case of animals, it is assumed that some species generally migrate due to adverse climatic effects, such as high or low temperatures, changes in climatic seasons, floods, among other natural factors, and it has also been suggested that some species migrate as a survival response to flee from predators.

In this context of animal migration, a few weeks ago a herd of Asian elephants left the Xishuangbanna reserve in China, and to date it is estimated that they have traveled more than 500 kilometers, an action that has puzzled the scientific community, because there is no scientific certainty as to where they are headed, nor why they decided to migrate.

According to scientific reports, elephant migration is common within the same territory, and generally the speed of movement is very low because, due to their large size, they tend to move over short distances as a strategy to conserve energy, and also to exploit smaller territories with abundant food supply.

For Yunnan University professor and specialist in the study of wild elephants Chen Mingyong, it is common for Asian elephants to migrate, but in the past it has been mainly to forage for food within their habitat, but a northward exodus is quite rare, in this sense, hopefully this atypical elephant migration behavior will be elucidated as soon as possible in the quest to create favorable conditions for this herd of Asian elephants.
