It is autumn already in Germany. For Munich that means that the 5th season of the year had begun: The Oktoberfest. This year it was happening from the 21st of September until the 6th of October.

The Oktoberfest in Munich is the world's largest folk festival and it is what munich is most known for. We are very proud of that 😎

When and how did the tradition of Oktoberfest start?

As many people don't know, this festival has a loooong tradition. Its origin took place on the Theresienwiese in the Bavarian capital on the occasion of the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria and Princess Therese on October 12, 1810. On that day numerous private and public celebrations occurred in Munich, including a horse race on October 17.

The festival site, which was then outside the city, was chosen because of its natural suitability. The Sendlinger Berg served as a grandstand for the 40,000 spectators of the race. The festival meadow remained undeveloped except for the royal tent. The visitors were served food, wine and beer.

The people of Munich loved this big party and had a perfect time, so it was stuck in their memory for long time and they kept repeating it year after year as they liked to party. From 1814 onwards. Climbing trees, bowling alleys and swings were added to the horse racing track. The first carousel was set up in 1818. Several lottery booths attracted poorer city residents in particular, as porcelain, silver and jewelry could be won.

In 1819 the Munich city fathers officially took over the management of the festival. From now on, Oktoberfest was scheduled to be celebrated every year.

With this proper management towards the end of the 19th century, Oktoberfest increasingly developed into a popular festival known all over the world. It was extended in time and brought was starting earlier since 1872 because of the usually beautiful and warm last days of September. Traditionally it begins on the Saturday after September 15th. Since then, only the last weekend of the Oktoberfest falls in October.

Around the same time

  • large beer halls were installed at the festival.
  • it attracted more and more showmen and carousel owners who provided additional entertainment.
  • The first chicken roastery opened in 1881
  • the outdoor areas of the festival grounds were illuminated electrically for the first time.
  • The first folk costume parade was organized, which was the highlight of a three-day “Historical Bavarian Folk Costume Festival”.

For this, traditional costumes and individual pieces of historical clothing from all Bavarian districts were brought together and re-tailored based on models. The procession is the model for today's traditional costume procession on the first Sunday of the Oktoberfest and it was exceptionally influential for the emerging folklore movement.

Today, many tourists just buy traditional cloth because they think it is some kind of costume. But it is in fact what the bavarians used to wear back then, and in some villages they still do - especially on festive days. Every village has their own style of Lederhosen and Dirndl. Locals can see where you come from - and also see when you are tourists and don´t have the traditional signs on your dress 😅

In 1910 the Oktoberfest celebrated its 100th birthday and 12,000 hectoliters of beer were served. If you want to see how that was back then there is a 14-minute film of the anniversary available in the Munich City Archives. The Bräurosl, the largest beer tent at the time, could accommodate 12,000 guests. Today, the Hofbräu Festival Hall, with 10,000 seats, is the largest beer tent at the Oktoberfest.

We are very proud in Munich that we kept on with this annual tradition almost every year since this wedding. There were only a few years like Napoleon's war, around the time of Worldwar one and Two, times of Cholera and Covid19, where the festival was canceled.

Growing up for me it was one of the highlights of the year. As a kid, it was so nice to have so many sweets, all the rides and rollercoasters. Later as a teenager, it was great to get drunk with our friends (we could drink beer for 16 years in Germany).

And later when I was doing my dual studying and living close by it was very nice to go after work or on the weekends with my friends.

Since I moved to Mexico though I have been to Oktoberfest very few times and then back in Germany with Covid it first was cancelled and then not a safe place to be.

So this year when my dad asked me to go with him and some friends I was excited to go after a long time. We decided to go on a Monday morning because we like it to be calm and comfortable. On weekends it is crazy crowded from morning on and full of drunk people. So we met at the closest train station: Hackerbrücke and walked about 10 minutes towards the entrance of the Oktoberfest.

The whole festival site is divided into two sites. On one side you have all the big halls from the different Munich beer breweries and food stands and on the other side, you have all the fun rides and rollercoasters. We planned to start with lunch first and then walk through the fun part.

The "real Munich people" - local Bavarians prefer only a few of the in total 38 halls. As you may know according to the festival's operating regulations, only beer from traditional Munich breweries may be served at Oktoberfest. The Munich breweries Spatenbräu, Augustiner, Paulaner, Hacker-Pschorr, Hofbräu, and Löwenbräu are currently represented with festival tents.

But for locals like us only Hacker, Spaten and Augustiner are the real deal. So the tent from Hacker-Pschorr was always one of our favorites to go. Not only because of the beer but also because of the traditional paintings /decorations inside and because here you have the biggest party in the afternoon /night 😜

In the middle, you can see a pavilion. The Bavarian band plays music there. The most important sights of Munich are captured on the left and right of the tent as paintings. I just love it here as it feels like you are in the center of Munich 🤗

Since the tents have sometimes had to be closed due to overcrowding in recent years, the city of Munich has set up an Oktoberfest barometer on its website that predicts the occupancy of the tents. If you ever feel like checking out this barometer, you will see that this tent is one of the favorites.

But that day we went on walking because we had a reservation in a different place.

You should know that in most of the beer halls, you only get 0,5 or 1 Liter Beer glasses and the beer is stronger than usual with a percentage of almost 13%.

To fight against the alcohol and food coma we went out and started walking again. One of the traditions, when you are at Oktoberfest, is to buy a gingerbread heart for others, so my dad got some for our friends and we bought one for each other.

There are around 200 fairground companies at Oktoberfest, almost 80 of which are rides. Many showman families have been represented at the Oktoberfest since the beginning of the 20th century. In addition to the popular nostalgic attractions, new rides are added every year, providing thrills using state-of-the-art technology.

Our next stop was the big wheel to go up and see the Oktoberfest from above and have a good overview. It was not so far away and we didn't have to wait long. Entrance on the other hand was quite expensive as everything (since Oktoberfest became sooo touristy).

As I said before, I haven't been to Oktoberfest in quite a while, but I have to admit that I had a great day - so maybe next year I will be going again. - It is all about the right timing and the right people my age to be able to enjoy it as the big party days are over already. 😄

Cheers & Un abrazo,
Liz

¡Gracias! :)

At Bilpcoin, we're committed to helping and supporting people, not abusing them. We're burning as many BPC tokens as we can. We ask, why doesn't anyone do anything about these bad downvotes on Hive?

Very alarming situation on Hive: Misuse of power, fake interactions, and abuse of downvoting we've spoken up about the abuse of power on Hive, only to be downvoted and spoken to poorly.

Themarkymark and others are misusing their power, with Blocktrades delegating Hive power to Buildawhale and Usainvote.

Consider revising the value plan, as it's not providing significant benefits to HIVE

The Value Plan, as it stands, seems to be a one-sided relationship with the HIVE platform, where the benefits are one-way

Actions indeed speak louder than words, a fact we've all observed individuals may talk a good game, a whole lot of shit, but their actions often expose their genuine nature LOL

We consider it unwise to engage in harmful actions, even if you think you can escape the repercussions

Oktoberfest in Canada …

In Kitchener-Waterloo, Oktoberfest was not established by royal decree, but with a noble motive just the same. In 1969, the founders of Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest saw this Bavarian tradition celebrated at the famous Concordia Club in Kitchener as an excellent opportunity to benefit the entire community by becoming a civic festival that celebrated our local German Canadian heritage. Learn more about the first 40 years of Canada’s Greatest Bavarian Festival!

Where today there is a cast of thousands, at its inception on October 14, 1969, there were only a handful of dedicated Oktoberfest organizers, among them festival founders Richard Hermansen, Owen Lackenbauer and Darwin Clay. As a veteran Oktoberfest volunteer, Jack Bishop tells us, according to Lackenbauer, “it was pretty exciting back then because we were flying blind. As part of the 1967 Centennial celebrations, the Concordia Club had a small Oktoberfest, and we had a mandate with the Chamber of Commerce to develop a tourism event to attract visitors. When we saw what Oktoberfest looked like, we said this is a great opportunity.” With a banner over King Street, posters here and there, and as much media coverage as could be mustered, the keg was tapped and history was made.

“We got the enthusiastic support of the German clubs and a tourism official from Munich, Germany. All we had was $200 and a vote of confidence from the Chamber to get it going. It was a phenomenal success for the first five days, and we turned a small profit with just short of 75,000 visitors,” recalled Lackenbauer. The success translated into happy patrons enjoying 57,000 gallons of Bavarian-hopped Oktoberfest beer brewed for the occasion and washing down over 50,000 pounds of sausages along with pigtails, sauerkraut and other German and Waterloo County fare.

“From the initial success 40 years ago, we knew we had a tiger by the tail. We took steps to make sure the festival belonged to the municipalities of Kitchener and Waterloo. And that is where it has remained—a community-owned festival. The present organization has maintained the festival’s traditional identity and the integrity of the model that was first developed while today representing new generations and different interests. That’s the key to Oktoberfest’s success, and I think they’ve done that very well,” noted Lackenbauer.

Since 1969, Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest has developed its own traditions, becoming the largest Bavarian festival in North America with the greatest Thanksgiving Day Parade in Canada. Thousands of visitors celebrate annually in our Festhallen, and by attending one or more of our many family and cultural events. Through the celebration of this Spirit of Gemütlichkeit, the local economy is stimulated and over 70 charities and not-for-profit organizations raise funds to support the high quality of life enjoyed in Kitchener-Waterloo. Willkommen to you, your family and friends.

Enjoy the many exciting experiences during our Festival celebration, and if someone asks why you are here… tell them Ludwig sent you.

And we here in the west of Romania we had last week such a festival called Oktoberfest but honestly, it has no charm of the one in Munich, even if here in Romania we ate German and drank German, we could not find the charm of the one in Germany.
I'm glad I was able to browse through your post and it feels like I was in Munich for a few minutes at the Oktoberfest.

I can imagine @triplug. When I was living in Mexico I attended one there as well.. but its not even close to the original one!

I had heard of Oktoberfest, not paid it much attention tbh, thought it was just a few bierkellers and every one getting lathered.

Thanks for educating me!

It really is a big event and loving it that some folk make the effort and dress accordingly.

Of course, many people go just to get drunk. We have about 6,7 million visitors every year and they drink loooots of beer. I think this year we had a total of 7 million beers sold. You can imagine what that means in party and else :D

But yes, at least Munich /German people all come dressed up in traditional close. You will see it a lot when you go there. - Its even almost a must (at least for us), that's why many tourists try to imitate it. They don't want to stand out of the rest :D

In my country where I live there is a town where I worked for 2 years, and the houses and way of dressing are similar, because it was founded by German emigrants in the last century, I loved their organization and love to work, fraternal hugs.

In San Francisco, CA, I patronized one of the finest German eateries and one of its finest German bakeries for Oktoberfest ... and I will return before October is out here ... I had forgotten in the last twenty years that although I do not often go into the crowd, and I do not drink beer, I do love German food ... das Essen schmeckt mir so gut! Oktoberfest is celebrated in San Francisco as well which is how the eating places got my attention ... glad to learn of the history of the festival through this post.

Some of San Francisco's finest architecture, including the Golden Gate Bridge, is a contribution of San Francisco's small but mighty German and German-American contingent, and there are still several German architecture firms that are based here as well as in Germany. The Goethe-Institut here is not shy about making sure the German contribution is not forgotten -- so, natürlich, Oktoberfest and a number of German eateries still do well here also.

Wow, that is nice to know @deeanndmathews. I love how in your country its so mutli culti :) - Here German food changed a lot in the past years. The older generation still loves that tipical German food, that is also served on Oktoberfest - very meat based. But the younger generation goes way more veggie. - We eat that food maybe once a month only or for special occations like Christmas.

In San Francisco, because coastal California is so veggie-heavy, even the German food we can get here is a little lighter... at Berliner Berliner where I got my Oktoberfest full meal, I was surprised at how much cabbage and onions there were with my Berliner Döner (local take on a Döner Kebab) ... HOWEVER, the vegetables were so fresh, and a German woman of mature age took her time and prepared all of that with love ... the meat was grilled to perfection, and there was just enough of it. I plan on going back for the Bavarian-style meal to try the bacon sauerkraut that comes with the bratwurst and pretzel.

I know about the typical German food ... I am a large woman and could have gotten into it twenty years ago ... but I understand now why that is only eaten for holidays. The lighter fare lets me continue to be a little less large as I pursue my other passion beloved also by many Germans: nature. I cannot eat the heavy food with my walking schedule in the parks and up the local hills -- but the beautiful German-style veggies fit right in to my more active and lighter lifestyle!

Sounds like I should visit San Francisco one day - as I also love veggie food ;) - Yeah, we use a lot of unions and cabbage always. Döner is also one of the favorite German meals and we do everything to perfection. So many people here planing every detail (not only on food) and living up to perfection every day. We are very proud on that ☀️

Great to hear you love the food and it fits into your lifestyle @deeanndmathews. Next time I will make sure to get you some pictures as well.

Ah -- I just remembered my pictures -- my first Berliner Döner, and my first actual Berliner -- about that I must say I understand why U.S. President John F. Kennedy said, "Ich bin ein Berliner!" (OK, it was an accident: he did not know to say, "Ich bin auf Berlin," but had he not made that mistake, I would have missed the best pastry of the year, 60 years later, for I would never have known to go looking!). I was sitting in my favorite place in San Francisco's famed Golden Gate Park, and feeling every inch of Schubert's Selige Welt on the beautiful day that my eating and walking combined with these!

Lol, our Döner looks totally different! But it looks still tasty though. Berliner is just the same. Here in the south we call it Krapfen ;)

I think that because people are more used to the presentation of Mexican food in San Francisco, she "dresses" the Döner like that ... but the flavors? Definitely German!

Now, I just have to get to Berlin to try the original and compare -- but next year! One has to be better prepared for a German winter than I am at this point in mild San Francisco -- for us, we would all die at 0 Celsius for a day-time high temperature - rarely is it even as low as 10 Celsius, all winter!
