Urban Reveries on Barbenheimer
Between Barbie and Oppenheimer, the chick kicked ass. The world said, we'd rather see the beauty of the female blooming in her delightfully buoyant splendor, the personification of the feminine principle in pink, not the gloomy downbeat slow drawl about the father of the atomic bomb. We want life! Happiness! The right and freedom to design our own chaos in a cheerful upbeat bubblegum manner.
Nuclear energy is scary. There is no two ways about it. Yet, nuclear energy powers this planet. I'm not talking about nuclear technology per se, I'm talking about the sun. The sun is a star running nuclear processes. Yet nobody freaks out about it. Don't forget to wear sunscreen though!
That's the crux of the matter, you see. Robert Oppenheimer is not the father of the atomic bomb, he is the first of the star makers. With his direction, humanity learned to control the same processes that power up stars from within. It doesn't take a nuclear physicist to figure out that making stars on the surface of an unstable planet is a bad idea, just ask Gerard K O'Neill. But this shouldn't take away from the key message that humanity is now a species of star makers!

We might WANT that, but get fucked, not all female is buoyant and pink - we are multi dimension, all colours. I mean 'get fucked' in a very Australian way - an outburst of naaaaaaaaaaaaaaah mate! He he.... hope you aren't offended, and I'm not going to be bubblegum pink about something I have a strong physical reaction to! So if people are choosing to see Barbie because they're only keen on this version, well, there's something wrong with the viewer. Saying that, I should watch it just to see what people are on about, but I'll wait til it comes out to rent.
But we NEED to see this too - we need to see and recognise and acknowlege this other side of the human experience and it's failings.

I don't want to see either, if I'm honest. I liked @honeydue's review of Barbie - she found it a little light, and I think I probably will too. And I've read enough about the atomic bomb and it's effects to not want to read or watch anymore. But... Cillian Murphy!
In terms of feminism, I watched a cool film on Netflix the other day I wasn't sure I'd like called Don't Worry Darling. I'll review it eventually. The reviews weren't that great but I really liked it in the end.

I'm familiar with the position of the classical feminists, who spent years protesting Barbie and what she represented in terms of her abilities and position in society. I was chuckling just thinking about how they feel about this sudden adoration of the doll icon and her pink attires.
I still stand by my assertion that beyond the bubblegum flavor, there's actually a greater desire, or perhaps hope, in the youthful exuberance and beauty, not of Barbie, but what she represents in terms of her fecund femininity. We're talking Parvatti levels of sensuality and adoration, with an American twist.
You're right, we need more discussion of the topics brough up in Oppenheimer, but they're just so darn uncomfortable. 😖

I haven't read this book yet, but it sounds harrowing. Atomic bombs are bad, and there's worse coming. Thankfully, the space race is heating up and frankly, I don't see another option. I think the genie is out of the bottle, so we need to get off the planet and go play with these energies away from Earth because we all know the genie is a jerk :)
