The Cognitive Files- Swinging Monkey
Motion creates a challenge for our perceptual systems given that it introduces a dynamic variable to scene processing. Objects move across the scene and we bring to bear more than just our visual system to perceive motion. For example, when you are in traffic and cars are moving, not only are you perceiving the visual stimulus of the moving cars, but the perceived motion created by your internal sensory-perceptual mechanisms. Sometimes, the cars around you don't move at all, but you can still perceive them as moving. At other times, the cars may be moving, but you perceive them as if they're standing still. Bottom-up and top-down cognitive-perceptual process come into play during these different scenarios.
As we move our eyes across daily scenes, the images of external objects move across our retinal matrices, yet we perceive them as stable. Motion perception is an extremely complex perceptual process, and yet to us, it seems so effortless. It is perhaps for this reason that very few of us actually bother to train our motion sensing and processing mechanisms.
Our ability to perceive motion involves different processes and mechanisms as follows:
- Visual system- light trapping eyeballs
- Brain processing- biocomputer integration in the visual cortex and 3D rendering
- Vestibular system- sense of motion created by body movements.
- Proprioception- self awareness of limbs and other parts of our bodies.
- Integration of cues- for accurate navigation, balance, and orientation.
- Psychological factors- attention, context, experience.
Interactive and dynamic digital information like video games, 3D digital environments, and virtual reality challenges that motion perception system and pushes us to improve their speed and accuracy. So start swinging!
