Duck Tales for the Fall

The waters of the Pacific ocean in western Canada are positively cold, understandably given our northern latitude. Even in the summer, you'd be bold to spend too much time floating there like a sleek seal. What truly amazes me are birds like cormorants, geese, and ducks who just glide around these frigid waters like it was nothing. They even dive into the depths looking for food for long periods of time. It's wild.

Apparently, air gets trapped between their feathers and skin, allowing them to insulate themselves from the cold environment. They also have large fat reserves, a clever circulatory blood
system, and might even make anti-freeze.

I took the following picture during a foggy morning with a temperature of about three deg C (37.4 F).

I thought the duck was by himself, but I saw the lady further behind, which is unusual because they usually swim close to each other. Maybe they're having duck-marital problems.

I took the following images on a different day. The temperature was around five degrees that day.

How will people be able to see through in the fog

The fog can get very thick and reduce visibility. This can be a problem for driving, but we rarely get those kinds of foggy days. A bigger issue in Canada is snow, which can reduce visibility to 0 and make it really dangerous for driving. So we have developed different ways to adjust to the conditions, like staying home instead of going out :)

I liked that one too. The duck pops out in the calm misty waters. 🦆
