A Precious Monument

This ring gear monument was created in honour of the bridges and industries that thrived in the False Creek area beginning in the 1800s. Swing span bridges were built to allow ship traffic. This gear was placed lying on its side in the middle of the span to rotate the bridge and allow passage through the channels. Belonging to one of the old bridges, the gear now stands at the entrance to the Cambie Bridge as a reminder of the hard work, productivity, and ingenuity of people from a bygone era.

Found a picture of that bridge from 1911 (public domain}
cambie bridge 1911.png.

It's a great picture, but do you think the air quality was as bad as it looks here???

Wow, everyone looks so sharp and stylish! The city has always had problems with air quality during the forest fire season, so that might be part of it. Or perhaps it's just an artifact of the photographic instrument. Great find! Thanks for sharing.
