[VIDEO GAMES] I'm really excited for Alliance Space Guard

I'm really excited for Alliance Space Guard

Not Enough Controls

I am ridiculously excited for Alliance Space Guard.

What once was

You see, once upon a time there was a game called Rogue System, which promised to be the DCS of space simulations, a game focused on the technical operation of a variety of space combat platforms which could execute a variety of different kinds of missions with different equipment load outs, advanced simulation of reasonably designed future technology, and eventually a fully simulated environment/galaxy where you could go off and pursue your general sandbox game fantasies of doing whatever you like.

It was the focus on extremely immersive "flight-sim-like" design which really excited me. So much so that I've even done a few RS videos myself, along the way. (If you view this video, I make no promises of your continued sanity.)

There are a _lot_ of people far better than me at this, mind you.

While I love DCS and the interest in combat aeronautics is pretty awesome, and while the new Flight Simulator also scratches the same kind of itch when you get up to planes like the 737, vast arrays of controls laid out in huge boards -- neither of them give me control of a huge interstellat ship foll of compliant crew at my every whim..

Unfortunately, the core developer of RS had a life changing accident and reevaluated how much time he wanted to spend on the project – which ultimately led to it being abandoned, much to the disappointment of many of us in the community.

What will be

ASG looks amazing.

The game has been in development for several years now and they have recently brought the broader galactic maneuvering systems into the game along with the electronic checklists and other operational sections, with the intent of leading up to NPC traffic and automated trade.

Let's look at the equivalent cold start up process for the CSN F9 "Carbon Arrow", a frigate-class ship intended for shipping, general support, and on occasion law enforcement.

I'm going to be honest. We both know that I was probably touching myself while I watched that video. It's quite possible that if you're reading this post, you might've been touching yourself during this video.

Look at that virtualized ship layout which gives you an idea of exactly what systems are working and what they're doing via a faded wireframe of the ship. That is absolutely sexy. That is the kind of thing that I would love to see more of in games in general.

Look at that ridiculously complicated flight control process with integrated checklists and augmentation of the process. Doesn't that look like something you could enjoy walking through just to get yourself into the mental space of playing the game once in a while, whether you're looking to go hard-core into being an interstellar trader (which is my usual inclination) or about to mount some missiles and go hunting pirates somewhere out in the cold?

I can't believe that I only stumbled on this game today, because I feel like the developers should have probably tasked someone in their fan base to come and hunt me down long before this so that I could be excited at this level.

This is amazing.

Now I just need a multiplayer, multi-crew simulator for this sort of thing, and I may never actually have to buy – who am I kidding? I'm going to be buying videogames for the rest of my life and possibly even after.

But AGS could be one that sticks with me if they manage to get it to see real daylight.

Okay, one more bit of ship porn. Ship. Porn.
