Empowering Africa with Affordable Mini Computers

Today, while technology is becoming a more integral part of our lives, the availability of computing devices is evidently a need rather than a privilege. Nonetheless for a lot of people and communities in these regions, economic restraints are some of the barriers to acquisition of such technology. To address this imbalance, Evan Karugaba, a software engineer from Uganda, took it as a mission to close the gap by developing computing solutions that solve the problems his region face while at the same time affordable.

Karugaba's journey began with a fundamental belief: That people should not be denied access to technology on account of their financial status. He recognized that technology could harness people's power, nurture innovation and bring about the change in communities, but at the same time he was aware that many people in Uganda and other African countries could not afford the traditional computing devices. He initiated to democratize access to computing and hence, he embarked to develop a solution that would be both affordable and working.

The outcome of Karugaba’s effort was the “Fusion Stick”, a pocket-size computer that provided the most basic computing capabilities at a less expensive cost of traditional desktops and laptops. Like a memory stick, the Fusion Stick in its looks covers the functionality of a standard computer, but the design is mini and portable. The Fusion Stick comes of out the box with built-in software and as a plug and play device, it provides users with a convenient and affordable computing solution.

The low power consumption is one of the primary inventions of the Fusion Stick. Like most computers, the Fusion Stick also requires some energy to work. However, it needs only four watts of power which makes it very energy-efficient and affordable to use. This benefit is therefore most suitable in places where access to reliable power supply is an issue or even costly, increasing the convenience and affordability of the product.

The Fusion Stick has affordability which has made it a game changer for many and most people in Uganda and beyond. Samantha Asimowe, a dental student, offers her opinion on the Fusion Stick regarding its affordability and the fact that it can be used for different purposes. By buying it at a much lower price than a conventional computer, she has been doing a great variety of things: writing reports, or listening to music, etc., just by using one television screen as a display.

Karugaba is not only interested in granting access to computer equipment but also in emancipating people and development of innovation in Africa. He thinks that technology can be a powerful tool for unleashing the creative talents of many ordinary people and the key to massively enhancing their lives. As it aims to increase production and extend market coverage, Karugaba is in a position to make a difference in many lives while at the same time contributing towards building a better Africa through low-priced and easy to access technology.
