Jeff Bezos Challenges NASA

Recently, we learned that NASA has chosen SpaceX for the Artemis program. But Jeff Bezos and his space company Blue Origin doesn’t like that.

NASA has recently chosen SpaceX as its company of choice to land on the Moon and plans to use a variant of the Starship spaceship that will land on its feet just as it is planning to use them to land on Earth or Mars.

Nonetheless, this is not what we will talk about today. The thing is, this decision by the Huan Landing System agency at NASA was recently challenged by none other than Jeff Bezos who after leaving Amazon is now fully focused on his space company Blue Origin. Thus, Bezos sent a complaint saying that his companies proposal wasn’t judged properly.

Blue Origin delivered a draft proposal in the first round alongside SpaceX and Dynetics – a three-stage concept called Blue Moon. NASA recently announced that they have chosen the design from SpaceX and no one else. And that’s exactly the issue. In his complaint, Bezos in his complaint addressed to the Government Accountability Office says that when it comes to so important projects NASA rarely relies on just a single company.

Thus, Bezos says that SpaceX shouldn’t be the only company that will be developing the landing modules for the Moon for NASA and that has its merits as any problems in the development of Starship could lead to delays in the whole Artemis program.

On top of that, we are obviously talking about a lot of money. SpaceX will get 2,890,000,000 dollars. Bezos complains that NASA put too much weight on the cost, more than previously intended making the solution from Blue Origin with a cost of 6 billion dollars much less favorable. And NASA negotiated the price with SpaceX while not doing the same with Blue Origin or Dynetics.

To the moon and beyond, it's only a matter of time. Bezos can take a back seat for now.
