After years of hard work by many teams finally – we have first artificial neurons on a silicon chip. They behave just like biological neurons while being completely different. This could and should start a revolution in the development of advanced medicinal devices to treat many chronic diseases such as heart disease, neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimers or Parkinsons.

It is just unbelievable, the artificial neurons are just like live ones and need only about one-billionth of the energy needed by your normal microprocessor. This predestines to for usage in medicinal implants and other bio-electrical devices. Science has been long dreaming of such artificial neurons as they always seemed to be a great way to treat diseases that include bad functioning or even dying of neurons. Artificial neurons could replace them or react correctly and allow the patient to get better.

The development of artificial neurons is insanely complicated. This is because neurons are very complex and it is hard to study their behavior and it is even harder to try to model and predict it. But over time, scientists managed to do exactly that. Then they designed and built silicone chips that model the biological ion channels – the key part of neuron communication.

The leader of the project – Alain Nogaret and his coworkers then made sure through experiments that their silicone neurons are very good at replicating the reactions of living neurons to a large number of stimuli. They managed to replicate the dynamics of hippocampus neurons and respiratory neurons in lab rats in many different stimuli.

Hopefully, this technology will soon reach a level where it can be truly used to save and make people's lives better. Neurodegenerative diseases are one of the scariest diseases out there as often they not only limit your physical abilities but also lead to a decline in your cognitive faculties. And if there is something I am truly scared of – it is slowly losing my intellect and being aware of it.
