Do we even need OpenClaw any more now that there is Grok Bot?

Not that long ago OpenClaw was the shiny new toy.

Self-hosted. Runs on your box. Talks to you in WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, Discord. Plugs in Claude, ChatGPT, local models, whatever you already pay for. Memory on your disk. Skills from the community. The "AI that actually does things" pitch.

For a stretch it felt like the all-in tool. Install the gateway, wire a model, and suddenly you had an assistant living in the apps you already open.

Then Grok Bot showed up in mid-August.

Different animal.

Grok Bot is not a gateway you babysit. It is a teammate with its own cloud computer. Browser. Filesystem. Terminal. It signs into the tools you already use and keeps working when your laptop is shut. You can spin up more than one and they can pass work between themselves.

That is a different promise. Less "run the stack." More "give it the job and come back to finished work."

So does anyone still use OpenClaw? Yes. Just not for the same reason they did six months ago.

OpenClaw still has strengths if you care about where the state lives. Your machine. Your VPS. Your rules. Local models. Channels Grok Bot does not live in yet. Custom skills.

Team setups you actually control. No vendor computer in the middle.

Grok Bot wins if you want easy to manage. No Node versions. No daemon. No "why did the gateway die at 2am." A computer that stays on. A product, not a project.

That is the real split. OpenClaw is infrastructure you operate. Grok Bot is a coworker you assign.

Plenty of people will keep both. Grok for the reasoning. OpenClaw as the house it lives in. Many have switched.

If you still run OpenClaw, what is it doing for you that the managed teammate cannot? 🤔

If you switched to Grok Bot, what broke first? How is it going? Are you sticking with it, or are token limits driving you back?

Pity you can't run it on your own local AI.

I could see a link happening between the two so a bot could interact for local AI, but having it fully local - not so sure.
