Would you be my screensaver?

Greetings!

I woke up this Thursday morning with a nostalgic throwback vibe, and one particular song that has been on my mind to write about for so long came rushing back—SCREENSAVER by Wizboyy.

The thing is, people—particularly Nigerians (I can’t speak for others)—who were born or became aware around the years 2009, 2010, 2012, or 2013 must have experienced the screensaver phenomenon on phones, especially the kind of phones we used back then, popularly known as CHINA phones.

The screensaver vibe back then is a far cry from what we have today. We've all grown up and evolved with the kinds of screensavers we now use. But in those days, we were absolutely obsessed with the pictures we used as screensavers on our phones. In fact, the more sophisticated your screensaver was, the more value and status you seemed to have. Sounds exaggerated, right? But it's the absolute truth!

Back then, if you had a fiancé or significant other, it was almost a rightful demand that you put their photo as your screensaver to prove your love for them. Failure to do so raised questions about the authenticity of your love. Imagine this was a period where poor-quality photos were the norm—yet, despite how grainy those photos were, we still derived immense joy from using them.

I remember a friend of mine. He was an extremely shy person, but one day, he decided to add a photo of his girlfriend as his screensaver. Their relationship was a secret to most people because we were part of a very talkative church, where gossip spread faster than wildfire. Only a few of us were in on the secret.

One fateful Wednesday, this my friend's privacy was almost exposed. A church member asked to use his phone to call her husband. Immediately after handing her the phone, he realized his girlfriend's photo was staring boldly at the screen. Panic set in! He rushed over, grabbed the phone abruptly from the woman, and hurriedly changed the screensaver before returning it to her.

The woman, who happened to be the leader of the church’s talkative crew, was left in shock, unsure of how to react to his strange behavior. My friend never offered an explanation, and thankfully, the incident didn’t blow his cover. It’s funny now, but that’s how serious the screensaver culture was back then.

For those of us who were sensible when Wizboyy’s song Screensaver was released, you’ll agree it was a certified banger—not just because of its catchy beat but also because of its simple, relatable lyrics. Come on, we all loved singing along to the line:
"Would you be my screensaver...."

Those were beautiful days—days of Bluetooth, when we’d transfer pictures from our boyfriends or girlfriends to use as screensavers. Those were also the days we’d visit websites like WAPTRICK to download cool JPEGs to use as screensavers. And hey, the screensaver competition was real—everyone wanted to have the coolest one.

Now, I have a request: any interested lady out there, I wouldn’t mind having you as my screensaver for just a week. So, if you’re game, hit me up!
