First time joining Facebook

Can I tell you about my first time joining Facebook?

Way back when we were trying to catch up with life on the internet, I didn’t really take an interest in joining Facebook because it appeared to be more 'powerful' than all the trending sites and apps back then. By 'powerful', I mean it was highly rated and not on the same level as the sites we were used to, such as 2go, Smiggle, and Eskimi for chatting.

After a while, I decided to give Facebook a try. I was using a Java phone— a Sony Ericsson with a rotating center button. Since Facebook was seen as a big platform, I didn’t want to use my low-end phone to register. I wanted everything to be on standard, and besides, the big guys we were following back then made it seem like Facebook required a certain level of class. I didn’t want to open an account that wasn’t professional, so I had to beg one of those guys to help me create a Facebook account.

Does that mean I couldn’t create a Facebook account myself? I could, but I just wanted a very standard profile. In those days, the biggest phones trending were the likes of Nokia X, which had a very good camera. The people using these types of phones were on top of the world, and according to them, only big phones could create a Facebook account properly.

I settled for their help. One of them created the account for me and then snapped a passport-like photograph of me with a very dirty wall as the background. That was the picture he uploaded as my profile photo. Mehnnnn, I was so happy that I had finally joined Facebook with a photo taken by a sharp camera! Till today, I haven’t removed that photo from my Facebook gallery because it reminds me of my first day on Facebook.

During Usage:

When I began using Facebook, the first thing that caught my attention was the friend suggestions. Immediately, I started sending friend requests to everyone on the page. After that, I searched for people with my surname to see if I could connect with family members I didn’t know. Oh yes, I did! I added everyone on the list and ended up also adding very external people with the same surname.

Oh, lest I forget! The phone I was using was given to me by a cousin who was based in Port Harcourt, and somehow, his contacts were still saved on the phone. All the people on Facebook from his contact list popped up, and I began sending them friend requests.

As soon as anyone accepted, I would get notified and immediately rush to message them. Laughably, some of those messages are still not replied to till today. Mess up! 😅

One thing I can boast about even to this day is that I never went searching for white people just to make friends with them. No, no, I wasn’t moved by that at all.😅

Reminiscing about those days is a lot of fun.
