@ecency-star released a prompt a few days ago asking our thoughts on technology, and the effect it has on shaping our future.

It's interesting to think of it on a personal level and also on a larger scale.

Computers In School

I remember when I was in 1st class there was a computer room we went to, but the PC's themselves were really basic, and we only really watched the screen as the teacher would share different things with each of our machines. It was kind of fun, in the class there were 2/3 to a PC, and I remember taking turns on MS Paint.

There was a specific class for going on the computers once every week or two, where we'd learn some stuff.

More than anything it was just used - I think - to give us a bit of a demonstration of how they were used, and more so than anything, let us know that these things existed, as opposed to actually using them to learn stuff on them.

As the years went on, we used computers that were connected to the internet, but again, I can't remember actually being able to use them properly or learn anything.

How They Could Have Helped Me, and Others

I was diagnosed with dyslexia when I was about 16, and it's kind of shocking that it took them that long to actually get me assessed.

My spelling was always awful, and going through my old copy books from even when I was in my teens is mad to think that the school never noticed anything, rather than just assuming I was lazy, or maybe they just thought I was an idiot, I'm not really sure which, perhaps both.

I still have awful, barely legible handwriting, so I think using a laptop of some kind in school to write would have been good, and would have most likely given me a bit more confidence while learning. If I'm being honest, after a few years I just gave up, until I got that diagnosis and realised that I wasn't just stupid.

Computers/ tablets would ensure that nobody feels like that while in school again, and they're probably doing a good job of it these days. Also, I'm sure they're more efficient too and find it easier and faster to write on.

Social Aspect of Technology

One of the things that kept me sane during the lockdown here in Ireland was Xbox Live, and the part function specifically. Being able to talk with friends was great, especially in the early days when nobody knew what was going on and were kind of freaked out by the situation.

For me, it was a major highlight of the entire situation.

Digital Nomads

This is something I've been thinking about more and more, especially since joining Hive. I think we have a great opportunity these days to potentially earn money by utilising our computers, laptops, tablets, and even phones.

I do work for people remotely too, which is something that's amazing about these days. Being able to potentially work for clients on the other side of the world is amazing, and opens up so many possibilities for people with some skills they want to capitalize on.
