Inventions Inspired by Nature: The Butterfly’s Wings.

Mother nature has bestowed to humans a lot of gifts. Not just gifts to behold, but those that we can imitate and make a man made replica of them. One of these gifts we have a lot to learn from is the Butterfly’s Wings.

The wings of the butterfly are so fragile. Strong wind, specks of dust and drops of moisture can make flying difficult for the butterfly. Despite this, the wings always stays clean and free of moisture. How does it achieve that?
A careful study of the butterfly shows that the surfaces of the wings are covered with tiny overlapping scales. This scales can be likened to tiles on the roof. As tiles on the roof allow for water to slide down easily, so also does the wings of the butterfly allows for drops of water and dirt to roll off easily. This makes the wings stay clean, shiny and fit for flight.

Engineers and scientists are now unraveling the secrets of the insect. They seek to replicate it’s water and dirt repelling properties in innovative technologies. The outcome of this is already being seen in different kinds of materials and equipments today like:

i. Water repellent surfaces for aircraft and wind turbines, reducing drag and increasing efficiency.

ii. Self cleaning materials for medical equipment, thereby bacteria growth and infection risks.

iii. Durable, water resistant coatings for electronics and infrastructure.

By emulating the butterfly’s wings design, we can create effective solutions that benefit from nature’s ingenuity. Definitely we still have a lot to learn from Mother Nature, it is really proving to be an amazing inspiration for cutting edge technology.
