Lightning Strikes on Eureka Moment in the Private Sector

At time of writing a wonderful storm passed over, and I love storms, was a wonderful way to wake up to a crack of flash & thunder, quite refreshing for the morning with such intensity it disrupted the Starlink Signal! The first I have ever seen that happen and we have had some pretty wild storms here over the past few years I assure you, in saying that it does bring to question, technology, storms and the state of the weather.
While it is a hot button topic, that of climate change, no matter what side of the fence you sit on regarding that topic, and specifically I talk to man made climate change, vs non-man-made climate change.
Personally, the data provided to me indicates a compelling argument, that manmade climate change, is a factor, however, it is also important to consider that the weather and climate does change, it is not one or the other, it is a combination of both interplaying, (An aside to my last piece, Type 1 Civilizations control the weather)
If we can measure rising sea levels, increased storm activity and other such phenomena then we must conclude, that whatever the answer to that question is, there certainly is something to say about increased weather velocity and subsequent activities.
The problem itself is that of a scientific one, but its important to note, that while affluent countries can engage in carbon reduction programs, there are some nations that, are still reliant on fossil fuels and other such pollutants and are unable to switch or require those fuels to assist in growing their nation out of impoverished states.

I am most certainly not, of the dispensation to be protesting, or any of that sort of silliness that goes on, yes I understand it raises awareness, and I understand the motive is to bring it to the attention of politicians, but, realistically, the politicians are well and truly aware of the matter as are all political parties, that objective was completed a considerably long time ago, now, is it forefront of mind? Perhaps not always, but, as you can see, as demonstrated by my little recent romp in Civilization VI running a country, is not that simple as being able to focus on one issue, and there are multiple always going on, but I digress,
The reality is, that rising sea levels is an issue, and increased pollutants do account to increased weather volatility, but we also must remember that it is also not beyond the realms of science for us to address these issues.
If we break them down, they are scientific obstacles that we need to overcome, what clean energy can be used, what cannot, what is the economics of doing so, and how do we get there, what options do we have available to reverse the damage already done?
Well, some may be able to talk to it better than I, but I am of the understanding that there were concepts discussed for cleaning the atmosphere that I believe were put forward in theoretical trials by NASA at some stage? I may however be misremembering it was information I overheard a long time ago.

However, we must consider, where is, the pollution coming from, is it Australia? Our contribution is relatively nothing compared to other global actors, yet, we have spent, and do spend, quite a lot of time on this issue, which, make no mistake is an important issue, but if our contributions are so relatively minor, compared to other industrious nations of whom, you can review the statistics for, as this is not meant to be an inflammatory piece, but rather, one of logical comparison.
Now, subsequent to this, there is also something that never comes up in conversation, that I have talked about, for quite a considerable amount of time, and that is, largely, technology is out of sync,
The infrastructure, for renewables is not there, and to be honest, with no disrespect intended, there is factually, a certain degree of influence that the major companies that control that supply chain have had, over certain decades.
Are fossil fuels intrinsically bad? No, of course not, its just fuel, but looking at it from a planetary point of view, are they viable to long term power production? No of course not, and that is perfectly fine, technology evolves, thus, when a technology is invented, an understanding of its use must also be considered, and known as to what the projected path to resolution will be.

But, again, diplomatic middle ground here, at the time, and place, when we established our reliance on fossil fuels, and the companies and in some cases monopolies that grew up around them, it was a very different world, substantially different to the world we live in now, in terms of our known science, capabilities and politics.
As all are aware, I am quite fond of the sea, and, as any lover of the sea shall know, the pacific garbage patch is testament to human wanton waste, its honestly a tragedy, and all the micro plastics we all consume on the regular in the water, now does that mean plastic is bad? Of course not, plastic was an essential human invention and technological step, the issue was, we have not invented correct waste management systems, filtration systems or otherwise, thus, because of that, we have those issues.
The same can also be said of electric vehicles, had, that technology been explored, several decades ago, the projected timeline for all the technology surrounding that would be dramatically ahead of where it is now.
Because, technological advancements, create scenarios, in which if they are not counterpointed, or complimented, with the appropriate surrounding science, there will be issues, again, consider plastics, wonderful, when we discovered the science of plastics, what consideration, if any, at a technological level was considered as to the outcome that would have on the environment, well, it’s a rhetorical question because the answer is self-evident, clearly very little, because we did not subsequently invent appropriate waste management systems.
If we were to invent, appropriate waste management systems, we could very well solve that issue, quite rapidly, and that’s a good commercial endeavour, for both the public, the private, the scientific advancements that come with it, all of which trickling back into the economy.
So no, protesting and all that sort of jazz, not my cup of tea, much respect to those that do, but those efforts are really not effective in modern day society, they were, several decades ago, when we did not have the internet and social media, but, its not required anymore to have your politicians think about things, honestly, many thousand shouting voices on Hive, at whatever is far more efficient, than causing a ruckus in cities and potentially hurting yourself, and others, sure it makes you feel good, but that’s about all it does, I learnt this many years ago, but I digress…
It is not, the public sector, that will address the matter of climate change, it will be the private sector, I actually recall having a conversation with an old colleague of mine about this while catching a train across Sydney harbour bridge, I pointed out to the city and stated, if the entire city, just decided to up and say I want renewable right now, to combat climate change, man made or natural, or even just for the sake of cost reduction, the reason doesn’t matter, there would not be enough infrastructure from the private sector to do it, so then its a planning issue, a development issue, a technological issue, but these things are, issues, not an impossibility.
Now, to the other side of the isle, I will state, that it is fairly well documented by our statistical departments that we, as a nation contribute on a global scale, relatively little to global pollution on that front, I’m not going to inflame the issue, by calling out which countries it is that contribute the most, but we know who they are, some, require it for manufacturing, and others, simply have no other option, they lack the economy, to be able to go renewable, which is something that is never taken into consideration by many.
There is a wonderful counter protest song by a chap named Remy, who I am quite fond of, very weird al, meets, logic, meets science and quite a bit of fun, however, the just stop oil people fail to take into consideration all the other aspects of what we use oil for, which is, enormous, I wont go into that, you can enjoy a bit of comedic political rhetoric by watching & listening to it yourself.

And the conspiracy theories and party lines about, “oh but its all some global conspiracy from the oil robber barons to keep their power” ok, it is, and it isn’t, we live in a free-market capitalist economy, yes? And what do you do in a free-market capitalist economy, you strive, to keep, and take, market share, its metaphoric of warfare, which is why when I do business, I always use military analogies, because commerce is economic warfare.
Those companies strive to take market share, and keep market share, and if its not in their interests to pursue something else of course they would not, but the middle ground I would say to these companies is, there is actually no reason for you to “lose your power” as it was, or your wealth or status or any such of the sort, look at, all the investment opportunities that exist, in being at the ground floor of innovation in this space, waste management, renewable energy solutions, companies, projects etc.
It’s a literal gold mine of potentially lucrative ideas, that would mean, you can take that, invest in it, and over time, slowly, roll your income and wealth over to that, as we roll back the destructive energy, its quite possible, but it has to be the private sector that innovates these things, the public sector moves to slow.
Look at what the likes of the constantly slagged off because its popular tech billionaires have been able to achieve, yes, issues and commentaries on their practices and businesses aside, strictly on the merits of the private sector, that is how fast it can move.
As we all know, the public sector moves slow, it would take our country, probably months, to come to decisions on market moves or otherwise that these private sector companies are able to make in simple a single meetings a lot of the time, now, is that an issue that we need to address in the public sector?
Perhaps it is, perhaps it isn’t, that’s certainly a discussion or debate for another time, but if we truly wish to address the root causes of climate change, no matter whether you feel its naturally occurring, or its manmade, or your somewhere in between we must look towards technological innovation as the answer, technology, is out of sync, but that, is a solvable problem, as is reversing some of the damage we have done.

I will round this out on a more fun note, did you know, that there was a plan to create aircraft carriers out of Icebergs once upon a time? It failed, but it was a novel concept.
