The Ocean Cleanup.- Garbage collector in oceans and rivers
The ocean has become the dumping ground for human-generated waste, where there are plastics and other floating objects, on the surface or along the water column, this being one of the great problems that the ocean has polluting the seas, littering the beaches and endangering the wildlife that are the first affected, in turn what is in the surroundings.
According to a study carried out by the Australian national scientific agency CSIRO, this great problem that is found in the ocean was detected, there are 14 million metric tons of microplastics at the bottom of the ocean. This is an international problem, currently there is a project that has been launched to reduce or eliminate the tons of garbage that exists in the ocean, this time I will touch on the subject of The Ocean Cleanup project.
History
This project was born from a young Dutchman named Boyan Slat, when he was 16 years old he went diving on a beach in Greece, but seeing wildlife his sight was of plastic contamination throughout the area, worried this young man gave himself the task of looking for a solution to eliminate pollution that exists in the oceans.
- In 2013 he created a non-profit foundation to start his great project The Ocean Cleanup, it is a floating boat of about 600 meters that has the goal of cleaning the ocean.
In 2014, he ran a crowdfunding campaign to raise money, in just 100 days he raised more than 2 million dollars for his project.
In 2015, the well-known Mega Expedition was carried out in which a fleet of 30 vessels crossed the Pacific garbage island.
2016, The Ocean Cleanup conducted a series of reconnaissance flights over the Pacific Garbage Island. This expedition was called the Air Expedition and it was the first aerial survey carried out of an island of ocean garbage.
In 2019, The Ocean Cleanup launched its new Interceptor River Cleanup Initiative to help clean the oceans by reducing the entry of pollution that reaches them through rivers.
Objective
CLEAN UP 90% OF THE OCEAN'S PLASTIC POLLUTION
HOW DOES IT WORK
Take advantage of natural ocean forces to trap and concentrate plastic. They move the system faster than plastic, allowing the plastic to concentrate and become entrapped. It is a 600m long float that floats and a 3m deep conical skirt attached underneath. It is autonomous, uses solar energy.
