The golden dome that surrounds the earth

Souce

The image above has gone viral, many people wonder what the golden dome that surrounds the earth is, what is that golden dome, the photograph was taken on January 21, 2024, it was taken in high exposure which allows you to see the stars .

It was taken from the International Space Station when it was 415 km high above the Pacific Ocean northeast of Papua New Guinea. On the left is the station's Nauca scientific module and the Prichal docking module, both from Ros Cosmos, the Russian space agency. .

What seems to cover the Earth like a golden bubble and which was already captured in other previous photos is called atmospheric glow, it is a natural phenomenon caused by the dispersion of sunlight, it is only visible from orbit or on nights with very little Light pollution.

The Earth's atmosphere is a cocktail of gases and particles, most of it is nitrogen with 78 percent, there is also oxygen with almost 21 percent and then we have argon, carbon dioxide, helium, water vapor and other elements.

When the sun's rays reach the Earth, they cross the atmosphere in different directions. During dawn or dusk, the collision of Light with the atmospheric layer generates an energetic alteration in the particles that compose it, which in turn causes a separation. of colors, is what we call dispersion.

For the human eye, tones with long wavelengths such as red and orange are more noticeable during this phenomenon, for this reason at dawn and dusk from space you can see the earth glow with a golden tone.
