We knew that there was water during the Noeic period, which is a period in the geology of Mars, that period goes from 4.1 billion years ago to 3.7 billion years ago, but with this meteorite we know that there was water even before, which is a factor very important to know to what extent life had opportunities to arise on Mars, that is, suddenly we know that there were about 250 million more years with water on Mars and also with more opportunities for life to arise.

It is the same time, both the Noeic period and this meteorite are from the same time in which life also emerged on Earth, there is geological evidence of both one thing and another, the question is why on Mars if the conditions They were similar to those on Earth, life did not emerge, at least we have not found it yet, it seems that Mars and Earth followed different paths.

We know that after the Noahic era, water gradually disappeared from the surface until Mars became a global desert, cold and dry. We know all of this mainly from the analysis of rovers and from images of ancient river beds, but A new report was published on September 25.

And how did this meteorite reach Earth, you may ask, it was about 4.25 billion years ago, we know it from the dating of the meteorite, a large asteroid hit Mars, launching debris into space, including this rock, then this rock wandered through space perhaps. for hundreds of thousands of years or millions of years until falling to earth.

This is not unusual. Mars and the Moon have a much lower gravity than that of the Earth. This meteorite is a piece of volcanic breccia, it weighs 320 grams. Volcanic breccia means that it is a piece of rock that is formed by other pieces of other rocks, in the style of a Christmas pudding for example, but the interesting thing is that some of the pieces that make up the meteorite are tiny zircon crystals and zircon is a delicious cake for geologists, since zircon can have a lot of information about what was happening when it was formed.

Zircon has the ability to trap minerals from its environment while it forms, saving the information of what is happening at that moment, at the moment of its creation.
