This bulge rises about 10 km above the surrounding lands and covers about 30 million square kilometers, that is one fifth of the surface of the red planet, an area almost equal to that of Africa or about three times the size of the United States. .


When Mars was formed, it was a very different planet. It has been calculated that volcanic activity helped it have a dense atmosphere and abundant water. Planetary geophysicist Roger J. Philis calculated in 2001 that an atmosphere of carbon dioxide may have formed at that time. carbon denser than Earth's current atmosphere, up to one and a half times denser.


And that the planet would have a layer of water with an average depth of at least 120 m, at that time Mars was not a red planet, it was a blue planet; Currently Mount Olympus is the largest mountain in the solar system, its height is a little more than 21 km above the average level of the Martian surface, above the average level of the Martian surface, not above the base.

The European space agency has discovered that these monstrous volcanoes are covered in water ice frost, something that was thought impossible, why experts thought it was impossible, because the mixture of sunlight and a thin atmosphere keeps temperatures relatively high both on the surface as on the tops of mountains unlike what happens here on earth, where you might expect to see frozen peaks at such enormous heights.


Spots of frost on Mars are present for a few hours around dawn and then evaporate as the day progresses due to sunlight. Frost is also related to the coldest Martian seasons, which makes the window for detecting it be even narrower.


Finally, despite being capable of very fine frost with a thickness similar to that of a human hair, the surface area covered by this frost is so large that scientists have calculated that it represents a total of 150,000 tons of water, that would be the amount of water that freezes and thaws in an exchange between the surface and the atmosphere, depending on the climatic conditions of the moment.


If the day progresses and it is hot, the frost evaporates and passes through the atmosphere. At night, with the cold, the frost falls and covers those volcanoes, so the question is, there will be more water under those volcanoes.
