Titan's Methane and Ethane waves.

Titan's Methane and Ethane waves.

The surface of Titan is the only one outside the Earth on which you could walk calmly without needing a pressurized space suit, something that we would need for example on Mars, the atmospheric pressure on Titan is one and a half times that of Earth, that is somewhat larger but perfectly acceptable, due to the pressure you would not notice anything special, yes, you would have to bring two things: first, warm, good quality clothing since the normal temperature on Titan is minus 179.5 degrees Celsius.

With that cold, any piece of skin that was exposed would freeze and of course our eyes would have to be protected by goggles similar to diving glasses; The second thing is that you would have to wear a gas mask and the corresponding air cylinders, air with oxygen, since Titan's air does not contain oxygen, but this would not be a problem, especially considering the low gravity of Titan. .

An 80 kg person on Earth would weigh 11 and a half kg on Titan, that is even less than on the moon and that despite the fact that Titan is larger than our moon, it is a question of density, the density of the moon is much greater than that of Titan, so on Titan we could walk around calmly without a pressurized space suit, although we would have to have a suit to protect us from the intense cold and some cylinders to be able to breathe, we could make some tremendous jumps and flying would be quite easy with a small glider

By the way, pay attention to this fact because the first person who suggested that Titan could have an atmosphere was the Spanish astronomer Josep Comas Sola. He did so in 1907 thanks to the observations he made of this moon, but what is news these days are the Research on the seas of Titan Curiously, almost all the lakes and seas of Titan are concentrated around the North Pole, we do not know if there is a cycle between the northern hemisphere and the southern hemisphere and this varies over time, these are things that are They will have to investigate in the future.

In the south there are some lakes, the largest is Lake Ontario, it has about 20,000 square km, a surface similar to Lake Ontario on Earth, but it is the northern hemisphere that concentrates the largest number of liquid masses, the largest sea of Titan is The Kraken Sea with about 500,000 square km, that is a little bigger than the Black Sea here on earth, the Black Sea is located between Ukraine Russia Turkey Romania Bulgaria and Georgia.

The Kraken Sea is believed to be also connected to the Legeia Sea, which is the second largest with about 126,000 square km. On Titan there is no liquid water due to the cold, the water is in the form of ice, but there is a lot of frozen water. , much of Titan's landscape is made up of water ice; On Titan, water ice is as common as rocks are on Earth and would fulfill a similar role; many mountains on Titan are made of water ice.

What runs through the rivers and what fills lakes and seas is methane and ethane, liquid hydrocarbons, elements that on Earth would be gases but due to the cold and atmospheric pressure of Titan, they are found there in liquid form, the existence of the seas. of Titan was a hypothesis until it was confirmed in 2007 with images taken by NASA's Casini spacecraft, since then scientists have pored over and other images in search of clues to the mystery surrounding the liquid environment of this giant Moon of Saturn.

The latest findings from the seas of Titan are thanks to the work of geologists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. These researchers have studied the data from the Casini Probe, specifically analyzing the coasts of Titan, and have demonstrated by combining the data collected by the Probe with Simulations that the coastlines of Titan's great seas have been shaped by waves, similar to what happens here on Earth.

The me team used a curious strategy, they created a model of the ways in which a lake can erode here on earth then they tried to fit their models into the data from the casini spacecraft, the data it collected from the seas of titan, the real data that we have about titan, in this way we found a model that fit the real data because we had the explanation of what happens in the lakes of titan and they discovered that what fit best was the action of the waves.

If we could stand on the edge of one of those Titan seas we could see waves of methane and ethane breaking on the shore. The researchers emphasize that their results are not definitive to confirm that there are waves on Titan, direct observations of the activity of the waves would be needed. waves on the surface of the moon, in fact, some researchers continue to say that Titan's seas are flat and smooth like mirrors, if a wave occurs it would be the size of millimeters according to these researchers, but as we see in this MIT research they are betting on quite the opposite or the big ones or the small ones.
