The undulating movement of our Galaxy.

The undulating movement of our Galaxy.

The Gaia observatory, one of my favorite space observatories, has discovered a big wave in our galaxy, a wave, our galaxy is rippling. For what reason? we don't know yet.

The Gaia observatory is not useful for discovering exoplanets, nor would it be useful for observing specific objects like 3I/Atlas, no, that is not its thing, its thing is to measure billions of objects at a time and discover how they move, that is called astrometry and it is used to measure the position and distance of approximately 1 billion stars, which seems like a lot, but it is only 1% of the total of our galaxy.

This is used to know how far away the stars are, every time we talk about a star, we like to know how far it is from us, especially if it is a star that is going to explode in a Supernova, above all that and also if it is coming towards us or if it is moving away, if it is a star that is going to crash in the form of a supernova, we are interested in knowing if it is coming towards us or we are going towards it.

And among other things, where is the solar system going, if we go towards a dangerous region of the galaxy because we know that we are circling the galactic center, it takes us about 225 million years to make a complete revolution of the solar system, which is called a galactic year, and in that journey, we do not always cross quiet areas, we can cross dangerous areas, in fact, the area where we are is the local bubble and this local bubble was an explosion zone of stars that exploded as supernovas, that is why they have left a void, a hole by those explosions.

If we had arrived about 10 million years earlier, the Earth would have suffered a mass extinction due to one of those supernova explosions, but in addition with Gaia, rivers of stars have been discovered, we know that there are streams of stars, thousands of stars that go in the same direction and now this enormous wave has been discovered that is making this "Come and Go" throughout our galaxy.

Since the 1950s we have known that the disk of the Milky Way is deformed, but we did not know because, in fact, we still do not know very well, to deform a galaxy something very big must have happened; In 2020, Gaia, this Space Observatory, discovered that this disk oscillates over time in a way similar to a top and has now discovered this large wave that shakes the movement of stars in our galaxy at distances of tens of thousands of light years.

It is as if a stone had been thrown into the galaxy and waves had formed in that pool of stars, why does it do that? There are several suspects, researchers who claim that it could be a structure similar to the radcliffe wave, this radcliffe wave was discovered last year, it is a smaller wave, it extends for 9,000 light years and affects one of the spiral arms of the Milky Way, what it does is shake the stars throughout that wave.

We have no idea what is causing this and keep in mind that if this happens it is a brutal waste of energy, obviously, moving thousands of stars in a wave form is a colossal energy effect, but we do not know what causes that wave or why that movement originates, in this case, in the wave that has just been discovered it is thought that it would be the same, but multiplied by 10 and affecting the entire galaxy, not just one arm.

The other option would be that the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy would have been responsible for this effect, making some kind of impact on the Milky Way.
