The sound of the Earth.

The earth emits sounds, sings a melody that can be heard and interpreted and can be used to predict earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, is what emerges from new research from the MIT Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Assistant Professor Matěj Peč.stated that “if you were listening the rocks would sing in higher and higher tones, as you go deeper” was what the researcher said. He also stated that if you could dive through the Earth's crust you could listen with a carefully attentive ear a cacophony of pops and crackles along the way.

The fissures, pores and defects that run through rocks are like strings that resonate when pressed and strained, and as this team of MIT geologists discovered, the rhythm and pitch of those sounds can help identify areas with a potential risk of earthquakes. or volcanic eruptions.

The Earth's crust is often compared to the skin of a planet. At its thickest point, the crust can be 70 km deep, a small fraction of what the planet is, since the entire planet is 12,700 km in diameter and However, the rocks that make up the planet's thin crust vary greatly in their strength and stability.

Geologists infer that rocks near the surface are brittle and fracture easily, compared to rocks at greater depths where immense pressures and heat from the core can make those rocks flow, the fact that rocks are brittle on the surface and more ductile at depth implies that there must be an intermediate point, a phase in which the rocks pass from one to the other and can have properties of both, they can be capable of fracturing like granite and flowing like honey.

Geologists believe that it is in that place where the most powerful earthquakes originate, so moral if we learn to listen to the song of the earth we can be alert to avoid the disaster of an earthquake or an eruption.
