The new generation of satellites equipped with AI.

The new generation of satellites equipped with AI.

Artificial Intelligence technologies have achieved notable successes and continue to show their value as pillars of scientific research and applications in the real world, the new ESA Φsat-2 mission scheduled for launch in the coming weeks is about to expand the Limits of AI for Earth Observation, demonstrating the transformative potential of AI for space technology.

Earth observation has been a vital source of data for scientists, companies and policymakers, with the arrival of new satellites and advanced sensors the quantity and quality of that data has increased exponentially in the last decade and this is where it comes in. Artificial Intelligence transforming huge amounts of raw data into actionable information quickly and accurately.

In 2020, ESA launched Φsat-1, its first experiment of how AI can be used for Earth observation, that satellite paved the way for its successor Φsat-2, a mission dedicated to fully exploring the benefits of utilization of extended onboard processing, with the Φsat-2 measuring just 22 x 10 x 33 cm.

The Φsat-2 is equipped with a multi-spectral camera and a powerful AI computer that analyzes and processes images in real time, this satellite is a true technological prodigy designed to transform images into maps, detect clouds and provide information on their distribution, classify boats. , compress on-board images, identify anomalies in marine ecosystems and detect forest fires.

ESA technical officer Nicola Melega commented that Φsat-2 will unlock a new era of real-time information from space and will allow customized AI applications to be easily developed, installed and operated on the satellite. Even in orbit, this adaptability maximizes the satellite value for scientists, companies and governments.

This mission is a collaborative effort between ESA and Open Cosmos with the support of an Industrial consortium that includes other companies in the sector, Φsat-2 is scheduled to take off this month on SpaceX Falcon 9 from Vandenberg Air Base in California United States .
