The leaks from the international space station.

The leaks from the international space station.

The international space station is getting old and faster than its managers would like, the space station has serious problems and it is possible that it will not reach 2030, which is when it is planned to be deorbited and destroyed over Point Nemo located in the South Pacific.

The latest is that on Thursday, September 26, NASA confirmed a new failure in the space station and it is a high-risk problem with very serious consequences, it is a leak, another one, a hole or perhaps a crack, it is that We still don't know this flaw is exposed in a report by experts who confirm that a Russian section of the station called the Zvezdá module is essentially a tunnel that connects a larger module to a spacecraft docking port.

This module has a leak Russian and American officials know that this small module has been having problems since September 2019 but the new report provides details not previously published by the space agency that also underline the severity of the problem, for example, in February This year, NASA identified an increase in the rate of gas leaks from inside the station, the gas astronauts need to breathe.

In April that rate increased, meaning that the crack or hole is getting larger and the most worrying thing is that despite years of investigation, neither Russian nor American officials have identified the cause of the leak, at the moment the plan to mitigate the risk is to keep the hatch of this module closed which leads to a PRK tunnel, over time if the leak gets even worse it might be necessary to close that hatch permanently and this is bad because it would block access to one of the There are currently four Russian space station docking ports.

The American and Russian space agencies have an agreement to continue working on the international space station until 2028, although NASA would like to extend operations until 2030, NASA had anticipated that it would accept this extension more than a year ago. , but so far no agreement has been reached with Russia on what will happen after 2030.

At the moment, NASA has contracted SpaceX with an $843 million contract to create a ship that pushes the space station towards Point Nemo. It would be an execution ship. This point is the most isolated place on the planet, located in the South Pacific and therefore It is the safest place to launch something from space and not hit anyone. There the station will make a re-entry where a large part of its structure will disintegrate in the atmosphere, although there are pieces that will end up impacting the ocean.

When that happens it will be the largest artificial structure to enter the Earth's atmosphere, but first the construction of a new international space station will have to be launched, but this time without the participation of Russia since the Russians want to build their own.
