The largest crater ever found

The largest crater ever found.

The craters are the scars that show us the impacts that have occurred, we only have to look at the moon, the moon is the visual and material record of billions of years of asteroid impacts, the moon arises suffers the same blows that it has suffered by the earth, in reality the earth suffers more because it is larger and therefore has a much greater attraction.

If there were no atmosphere on Earth without the Earth's crust being solidified as happens with the moon, the Earth would present an appearance full of characters, it would look like Mercury, it would be something tremendous, this does not happen because our planet exists a constant movement in the crust, the movement of the tectonic plates and erosion that destroy the craters, after a few million years the craters fill with sediments and in a few hundred million years they practically disappear.

To find them, they are searched for geomagnetic anomalies or for more complex systems. There are rare cases such as the oldest known crater and until not long ago also considered the largest crater on the planet, it is the Vredefort crater in South Africa, which is 300 kilometers wide, so let us have a reference to the chicxulub crater, it is between 180 - 200 km in diameter according to sources, that must have been a planetary catastrophe in South Africa, a mass extinction but a mass extinction of bacteria, because it is the oldest, it is estimated that That impact occurred 2020 million years ago, at that time there were no animals on earth, it was a kingdom of microscopic creatures.

The discoveries of new craters are complicated because the erosion and movement of the tectonic plates end up dissolving, breaking or erasing them, but in recent weeks two news stories have appeared in the media that talk about the discovery of two giant craters, one in Australia and another in the west of the Falklands.

They are findings that involve work of many years of research, collecting evidence and taking step after step to discover the mystery of what happened, about these two craters in the month of August, these two mega craters were news because some new ones were found. data, not because they were found suddenly.

The geologist Android Wilson has explained that the Australian crater could be up to 520 kilometers in diameter, it is a beast, it is the distance between Madrid and Barcelona or between Mexico City or Zacatecas or between San Francisco and Los Angeles and of course when I put those distance examples I'm talking about the crater.

The Australian crater is called the Deniliquin structure and is located in the south of New South Wales. In the image you can more or less see the area. It could be the largest asteroid impact structure ever found and known to humanity, but Despite its enormous size, even if we traveled to Australia we would not see anything special, apart from the Australian landscapes, but we would not see the shape of a traditional or recent crater there.

The Deniliquin structure is very old and has been detected thanks to magnetic readings of the area, which reveal a symmetrical wavy pattern in the crust around the core of the structure, this is a clue that probably indicates that a gigantic impact occurred there and when the extremely high temperatures of the impact caused intense magnetic forces, altering the magnetism of the area.

Researchers believe the impact occurred during the Late Orthovician mass extinction event, that was about 445 million years ago, that mass extinction eliminated about 85% of the planet's species, it was more than double the scale of the impact of chicxulub that ended the era of the dinosaurs, it is also possible that the Deniliquin structure is older than another previous event that could be about 514 million years old.

More study is still expected to conclude some theories put forward by geologists.
