The largest carbon molecules ever found on Mars.

The largest carbon molecules ever found on Mars.

Mars is another amazing place, looking for life on Mars, on March 24 a research was published with the suggestive title of “long-chain alkanes preserved in a Martian shale”, this means that they have found carbon molecules, in fact, they are the largest carbon molecules found on Mars and this reinforces the hypothesis that life could arise on Mars, by finding these large, complex compounds.

It was found in what was the ancient bed of a lake on Mars and this also falls within the growing library of organic compounds, because many are already being found, these are news because they are the largest and together they can be a vital clue about the history of life on the red planet.

The discovery was made by Curiosity and an international team here on Earth ended up confirming it, the bad thing is that these molecules could have originated from non-living processes, due to geological activity, the good thing is that the very fact that they exist demonstrates the ability, on the one hand, of the rover to identify long organic molecules, which is good and on the other hand it means that Mars did have the capacity to generate complex organic molecules and let us remember that billions of years ago Mars had the same conditions as the Earth for life to arise on it.

It had a dense atmosphere, it had oceans, it rained, there were rivers and there were organic molecules and for quite a long time, for hundreds of millions of years, some say for more than 1 billion years and also at the same time that life arose on Earth, so the big question is where is it.

We could say Martian fossils, but the big problem we have in searching for life on Mars, past life and present life, is on the one hand that the margin time, those 1000 million years, for example, are not enough for complex animals to emerge, taking into account the experience here on Earth, complex animals emerged from about 600 to 650 million years ago and all these fossils that we found, the vast majority of them are less than 500 million years old. years.

All these shells, even that we can find walking on the beach or on cliffs, all those fossils are not that old, if evolution did arise life on Mars and followed a process similar to that on Earth when Mars stopped having seas, having rivers, having the capacity to have life on the surface, that life had not yet evolved into complex life forms, they would be microorganisms and those are very difficult to detect in rocks or sediments, in the materials that the rovers are looking for right now.

This does not mean that life does not exist on Mars currently because if life existed on Mars in the past, those microorganisms were able to descend and colonize the interior of Mars, just as here on Earth, a large part of the living beings on this planet Earth live below the surface and on Mars below the surface we know that there are large reserves of water ice and that water ice can be in liquid form in those places where there is geological activity and we know that microorganisms here on Earth can survive and evolve below the surface, so if life on Mars arose At one time, it could have taken refuge under there and it could have evolved, but below on the surface, where at the moment the equipment we have does not reach, which is the bad thing.

On the one hand, if there is life on Mars, it will be below the surface and we cannot drill as much or we cannot go down as far and on the other hand, if there was life, if life arose in the past, the traces it has left are very small and very complicated to discover, but that does not mean that they do not exist.

Getting into the ice on Mars may give a lot of data as well. Will be good after 2026 with a few Optimus robots zipping around to get a lot more research done more quickly. Hopefully a Starship with a laboratory on board can land safely, then a lot more analysis can be done on the spot.
