The Era of Orbital Artificial Intelligence Begins

Google wants to bring computing to space with the Suncatcher project, the company proposes an unprecedented leap, building orbital data centers powered directly by solar energy, capable of running artificial intelligence models far beyond the energy and environmental limitations of the Earth.

Announced last week, the project describes a constellation of intelligent satellites equipped with TPUs, tensor processing units, interconnected by ultra-high-speed optical connections and positioned in sun-synchronous orbits, where the sunlight practically never goes out.

The idea is to create a space infrastructure that operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with energy efficiency up to eight times greater than that of terrestrial solar panels, according to the document published by the company, "in the correct orbit, a solar panel can be up to eight times more productive than on Earth and generate energy almost continuously."

This means that, instead of relying on large electrical grids and cooling systems on the ground, these orbital data centers could operate without direct emissions and with almost zero energy cost, the Suncatcher satellites would be small, but extremely powerful. Each unit would house TPU chips adapted to cosmic radiation, capable of executing trillions of operations per second.

These satellites would communicate with each other through optical links that reach tens of terabits per second, forming an AI mesh in orbit, a true space cloud. The first tests carried out in the laboratory have already demonstrated a bidirectional transmission of 800 GigaBit per second, validating the technical feasibility of the interconnections between the satellites.

Google plans to conduct the first in-orbit tests by 2027 in collaboration with Planet Labs, launching two prototype satellites that will validate the hardware and the intersatellite optical communication system. The Sunkatcher company is still in its early stages, but represents one of the boldest visions in the history of modern computing, using space as a platform to expand the limits of artificial intelligence.
