There are technologies that help us save lives and technologies that help us discover lives from the past, to discover lost cities and settlements, this is what the research team led by Vinicius Peripato of the National Institute of Space Research of Brazil has done.

It has been suggested that the Amazon rainforest could have between 10,000 to 24,000 structures from the pre-Columbian era that have not yet been discovered and some of those settlements could be up to 12,000 years old.

To make this calculation, the researchers used LIDAR, which is a pulsed laser scanning system, and did so over some 5,315 square km of the jungle. They discovered 24 previously unidentified alterations in the soil that coincided with the shape of architectural structures, including The discoveries they have made include a fortified village in the southern Amazon, they have also found megalithic structures in the Guiana shield and riverine settlements in the alluvial plains of the central Amazon.

And there is more, because they have used Artificial Intelligence to discover in an area of 475,000 square km 6000 places of archaeological interest located in the Indus Valley, the cradle of one of the first civilizations of humanity.

The work was presented by the Spanish researcher Iván Berganzo Besga in his doctoral thesis. Iván Verganzo is a telecommunications engineer with a doctorate in computational archeology and a researcher at the Catalan Institute of Classical Archaeology.

Artificial Intelligence is a powerful tool that, when combined with archaeological knowledge, is capable of detecting small pieces of ceramic, path lines, walls and other buried constructions from the air, and is even capable of discovering plant particles left in the ground and that could indicate the existence of old crop fields.
