Teaching to walk for other worlds

A multidisciplinary team of researchers is teaching canine robots to navigate lunar craters and other challenging planetary surfaces, as part of NASA-funded research researchers from several universities and the Johnson Space Center tested a quadruped named Spirit on the Palmer Glacier in Oregon .

During five days of testing, Spirit traversed terrain rivers, traveling up and down dirt, snow and under rocks using its thin metal legs, the team made up of engineers, cognitive scientists, geoscientists and planetary scientists as part of the project Lassie said the exercise served to learn more about how robots can walk more skillfully in these terrains and claim that the images captured on Mount Hood show their surroundings real and supernatural analogs to other planets.

These ground tests offer the robot ample opportunities to learn and adapt before embarking on potential explorations beyond our world. The goal of the project is to help NASA send groups of robots to the moon so they can cooperate with humans and other robots. in order to complete missions.

They would exchange information about their prior knowledge, as well as information collected during the mission, according to one of the roboticists, they would feel what the ground conditions are like and then exchange that information among themselves and collectively form a locomotion risk estimation map.

The robot team could then use this travel risk map to inform their planetary explorations and an example of a message exchanged would be “there is a patch of extremely soft sand that may be high risk for wheeled rovers, change your Route to this one. “It can be a safer area.”

The robotic team envisions a wheeled Rover for heavy loads and long distances, an exapod robot for medium loads and enhanced mobility and a robust large dog-like robot that offers high mobility over shorter distances.
