StarShip V3 suffers an explosion during testing.

SpaceX often says that failure speeds up learning, but sometimes a single explosion can throw an entire schedule into question, and that's exactly what happened in South Texas when the updated version of StarShip V3 suffered an explosion before even receiving its engines.

In the early hours of Friday, around 4 in the morning, cameras monitoring Starbase recorded something unusual, an internal detonation that destroyed the entire lower side of the booster, leaving the rest almost intact, it was that fireball typical of the first years of testing, it was something more localized, deep, as if it had occurred inside the structure.

SpaceX confirmed that it was conducting a pressure test of the gas system when the accident occurred. According to the company, no one was injured, the area was isolated, but teams are still investigating the exact cause of the failure.

What exploded was not just any prototype, it was the first major piece of the StarShip V3, the new generation of the vehicle that Elon Musk considers essential for transporting heavy loads, mounting interplanetary missions and docking two StarShip in orbit for fuel transfer.

V3 must be larger, more powerful and more reliable than previous versions and that is precisely why this accident raises so many questions about the next steps. SpaceX closed the StarShip V2 cycle in October and was preparing an extremely ambitious 2026.

Among the goals is to show in space the ability to transfer fuel between a common StarShip and a StarShip tank, a mandatory requirement of NASA before the manned missions to the Moon scheduled for 2028, any delay can now become a domino effect, a project where each explosion sometimes shows the greatest impact is not on the metal structure, but on the watch.

The StarShip V3 was born under pressure and now more than ever every second matters.
