SpaceX's new spacesuit

Spacex has just revealed the suits that its astronauts will wear on the first private spacewalk scheduled for 2024 during the Polaris Dawn mission, these suits represent a fusion of fashion and function, with futuristic features designed to meet the challenges of the space environment.

Unlike the simplified depiction of spacesuits in movies and television shows, the real suits are complex pieces of engineering, essential to protect astronauts and provide mobility and functionality in space; SpaceX is developing a new extravehicular activity suit for the Polaris Dawn mission, as the suit currently in use called the intravehicular activity suit is suitable only for emergencies inside the Dragon capsule.

The new suit is an updated version of the suits used on previous US missions, such as the Apollo and Skylab missions, designed to offer more mobility, durability and protection from the elements of space. The extravehicular activity suit will allow astronauts to perform tasks complex during the spacewalk, as it is designed to be more resistant to tears and abrasions, as well as to keep astronauts at a comfortable temperature and protect them against micrometeorites, maintains the lines and fit of the current intravehicular suit, but uses new materials , manufacturing processes and rotary joints for greater mobility and comfort.

The helmet of the new suit is 3D printed and has a new visor coated with copper and indium oxide to withstand sunlight, in addition the helmet houses an information display and a camera to provide real-time information about the suit that also features new thermal management fabrics and fire resistant materials.

The Space Walk during the Polaris Dawn mission will last 2 hours and will include two of the four crew members of the mission, the objective will be to test the safety and practicality of the new suits, as well as a special construction equipped with supports for the hands and interfaces to facilitate entry and exit of the capsule, with these innovative suits SpaceX is closer to successfully carrying out the first private spacewalk marking another significant step in space exploration.
