Russia writes off Luna 25 Mission

Roscosmos, which is Russian space science and has issued a statement on August 20 where they reported the following:

“On August 19, in accordance with the Luna 25 spacecraft flight schedule, a boost was provided for pre-landing elliptical orbit.

At approximately 14:57 Moscow time, communication with the Luna 25 spacecraft was interrupted.

The efforts made on August 19 and 20 to search for the device and make contact with it gave us no results. According to the results of a preliminary analysis, due to the deviation of the real parameters of the calculated impulse, the ship changed to an orbit not planned and ceased to exist as a result of a collision with the lunar surface.

A specially formed interdepartmental commission will deal with issues of clarifying the reasons for the loss of the moon 25.”

The Luna 25 mission was launched on August 11 by means of a Soyuz II rocket from the Bostotching Cosmodrome located in Siberia more than 5,550 kilometers east of Moscow near the border with China.

The ship should have gently landed on the lunar surface on Monday, August 21, and should have been the first ship to reach the South Pole of the moon, a region that is still unexplored. Russia also intended with this mission to resume the lunar program of the Soviet Union that stopped 47 years ago, when the Luna 24 Probe was launched on August 9, 1936.

A ship that, like the previous Soviet waves, was capable of collecting samples of the lunar soil and sending them to Earth, specifically the return capsule of the moon 24 brought about 170 grams of lunar samples, in this way the Russian scientists demonstrated that materials could be collected from objects in the Cosmos without the need to send expensive missions with a human crew.

The Luna 25 probe was not designed to send samples to earth, but it had the capacity to analyze lunar soil and detect the existence of water ice, since the interest of world powers in the lunar South Pole is due to the fact that it is believed that Large reserves of water ice are hidden underground or in the dark areas of craters, an essential element if a permanent human base is to be established on the moon, something that Russia intends to do from the year 2030 in collaboration with China. a lunar base station that would be complete before the year 2035.

Landing on the moon is not easy, the Soviet Union achieved it with the Luna 9 probe on January 31, 1966, but before that it had failed 11 times; The United States got it the first time, but then it failed several times and before that it had several impact missions that also failed.

Since the landing of the Chinese changa 4 mission on December 7, 2018, all other attempts have failed, Israel's Beresheet, India's chanrayan 2 and Japan's Hakuto-R crashed, China also managed to land in November From 2020 to the 5 job that collected samples of the lunar soil and sent them to Earth, the truth is that China's success rate is impressive among the great space powers, it is by far the one with the fewest failures.

By the way, although landing on the moon is a correct term, it is becoming very outdated, all space agencies currently prefer to use the term landing, understanding earth in lower case as a synonym for ground and not earth in upper case as the name of Planet, thus simplifying the problem of Name the operation of placing a ship on an object of the Cosmos, since ships now do so on the moon, on Mars, on asteroids and even on a comet, and in the future they will do so on other moons and planets.
