Our journey in the Local bubble

Our journey in the Local bubble

What you see is the local bubble, the little yellow dot is the solar system with the sun and this is the evolution of its journey and we are precisely in the center, the sun goes around orbiting the galaxy to the milky way, it takes about 225 approximately millions of years to make a complete revolution in what is called a galactic year.

And during that time, it travels through various places and various areas with different characteristics. We have been in what is called the local bubble for a long time and we will still be there for several hundred thousand years because it is quite large.

This local bubble was created about 10 to 14 million years ago, which in the galactic year would have been a few weeks ago and was created due to the explosion of several supernovae, it was a real battlefield, if the solar system had only reached 10 millions of years before to this place because we would be in the middle of several supernova explosions, it would have meant a mass extinction.

As far as we know, there is no star with supernova potential that could affect us, and those that do occur are too far away to cause damage to the Earth's atmosphere or the ozone layer or to ourselves. In fact, Betelgeuse is the The star about to “explode” is the closest and we are 650 light years away from it, very far from a safe distance where problems begin to arise, according to NASA, it is 160 light years away where it could affect.

The universe and our place in it is amazing. The timescales seem so large to us, but as you said, it is mere weeks in cosmological time.
