On the new DARPA plane
On the new DARPA plane

Imagine an aircraft capable of taking off like a helicopter, crossing the skies at high speed like a jet and then simply folding its propellers in the air to reduce drag and gain even more performance, that's exactly what Bell is about to test in the real world.
The secret is in the hybrid system, the rotors act only during takeoff, landing and low speed maneuvers, when the aircraft enters cruise mode, the rotors stop and fold, transforming the plane's profile into something cleaner, ideal for speed and stability, this not only improves performance, but also reduces the radar signature, making the X-Plane more stealthy.

It's interesting to see this concept finally leave the realm of science-fiction, but I would have concerns about the integrity and reliability of all of those moving parts. Only time will tell if Bell is successful at solving those challenges.
The idea is not new, there is an old plane with those characteristics, what it is doing right now is improving that entire system.
