New advances on hot Jupiters

There has been news about the mystery of hot Jupiters, they are called that because they are gas giant planets similar to our Jupiter, but they orbit very close to their star, much closer to what Mercury orbits the Sun and therefore in them it's really hot.


Some orbit so close that they are doomed to disintegrate or fall into their star, the point is that many of them have been discovered, which is easy to explain since the bigger an exoplanet is and the closer to its star it is, the easier it is to do so. detect.


The earth, on the other hand, is a small and remote planet and worlds like the earth are very difficult to capture, which does not mean that there are not many worlds like ours if we have discovered very few, it is simply because we still do not have the appropriate technology to be able to discover them.

But every time a hot Jupiter is discovered, a terrifying mystery arises, since according to astronomers these gas giants could not have formed so close to their star, their place of creation had to be much further away and for reasons that are still a mystery, reasons that are being investigated moved to get closer to their star.


On that trip the gas giants devastated, swallowed or expelled all the planets that were in their path, if our beloved Jupiter had undertaken that journey towards the Sun it would have devastated everything that exists in the habitable zone of the solar system, Mars, Earth, Venus and Mercury would not exist or we would have been kicked out of the solar system.


That is why when an astronomer finds a hot Jupiter, he deduces that there was a very sad story there, a story that spelled the end of small planets like ours orbiting in the habitable zone, because if they went up they would be destroyed by the hot Jupiter or ejected into interstellar space.

That is what was thought at least until now, because the new research led by astronomer Songhu Wang of Indiana University in the United States challenges what was thought about Jupiter being hot and proposes a new mechanism to understand the evolution of exoplanets.


The researchers analyzed a huge amount of NASA data and found that at least 12% of hot Jupiters and 70% of hot Jupiters have nearby orbiting planets, where hot Jupiters are similar to hot Jupiters only that they are a little further away, if a typical hot Jupiter takes less than 10 days to go around its star, the fallen ones take between 10 and 300 days, it would be like having a Jupiter orbiting the Sun from closer than it is Mercury to almost the orbit of Venus.


The interesting thing about this research is that it opens the hope that there are systems with Jupiter is hot that keep small worlds like Earth orbiting in the habitable area, where life can arise.
