Pursuing the idea of achieving a powerful and economic engine that allows us to travel to Mars in just 30 days, for example, the British company Pulsar Fusion has just partnered with the American Princeton satellite assistance to create a rocket engine that works with a reactor of nuclear fusion.

To achieve this, they will also apply artificial intelligence in this way they will be able to advance faster in the development of the research and better understand very complex issues, such as the behavior of plasma at high temperatures and in electromagnetic confinement.


Nuclear fusion seeks to produce energy as stars do by fusing hydrogen atoms. Currently, reactors can fuse atoms but it is not easy since they do not produce enough energy and do it continuously to make it profitable, although it is something that is expected to be achieved within a few years.

Developing a space nuclear fusion engine as these two companies want will not be easy either, but it has the advantage that it will be simpler than creating a nuclear fusion power plant to obtain electrical energy here on earth, as this is possible.


In space, many of the elements that are in a terrestrial power plant are not needed, in addition, space is the ideal place to do fusion because there is a vacuum and extremely cold temperatures, fusion propulsion does not need a giant steam turbine as it happens in power plants and fuels can be sourced externally rather than having to be created on site.


According to the experts who are developing this project, its fusion engine will be a thousand times more powerful than ion engines, a type of engine that has been used in various spacecraft, the last one in the Dark Probe that crashed into the Dimorphos asteroid to divert it.


The companies that have partnered aim to create a space rocket engine with the potential to reach 500,000 miles per hour that would cut travel time to Mars by just 30 days and make Saturn's moon Titan reachable in two years.
