It electrically links the brain, body and spinal cord

Artificial Intelligence is already beginning to be used in many areas, one of them is in paralysis, recovering the lost mobility of the body, it is a dream of many and this is a technology that is advancing amazingly in recent years.

One of the latest cases was found in 45-year-old Keith Thomas, in 2020 a diving accident caused damage to his c4 and c5 vertebrae, this caused him to completely lose sensitivity and movement of his limbs due to below the neck, imagine the sensation of living in a body from which you are disconnected.

Now a research team from the Feinstein Institute for Bioelectronic Medicine at Northwell Health has managed to develop brain implant technology that makes use of artificial intelligence, allowing Mr. Thomas to partially recover the sensitivity and movement that he had lost in his limbs.

The research team had to spend months mapping Thomas's brain using magnetic resonance tomography, the purpose was to locate the parts of the brain responsible for the movement of his arms and the sense of touch in his hands, in the end using implants they were able to connect those parts of the brain with the parts of the body that had been disconnected by the accident.

This is the first time the brain, body and spinal cord have been electronically linked in a paralyzed human to restore lasting shape to movement and sensation, Chad Bouton, a professor at the Institute of Bioelectronic Medicine, said. The movements may be somewhat basic, but it is a big step for Thomas and to think about what can come in the future with the development of artificial intelligence and connections with the mind.

Currently, more than 100 million people around the world live with some type of disability or movement paralysis, we are close to humanity overcoming this problem.
