Illusions are a mystery of our perception, Van Gogh's Starry Night illusion is very well known, you have probably already seen it, but the illusion that I present to you is incredible, it is a simple fixed image that for some reason seems to be moving all the time. time.

It's called rotating snakes, its author is Akiyoshi Kitaoka, a psychology researcher and definitely an artist who experiments with many types of visual illusions and I'm going to show you some of them in this post.

The image is mesmerizing not a subtle illusion at all, it really looks like these abstract coiled snakes are spinning in different directions, the direction of rotation has to do with the order of colors in the snakes design, they always seem to go in the wrong direction. to where the blue oval is with respect to the black color.

It is amazing how a simple combination of colors and shapes can produce such an exaggerated and disturbing effect while hacking our perception, visual illusions have been with us for many centuries, in the Hindu air temple in India, we can see this relief sculpture of an ox and an elephant, the head is both of the ox and of the elephant depending on the figure you are paying attention to, not bad for the year 1166.

The glassmakers who created the stained glass windows of medieval churches knew of an effect called chromostereopsis, where just by using certain colors you can give depth to a completely flat image.

Some people see the sunken blue color as if it were behind the red but other people perceive it upside down together, curiously there is still no scientific consensus on why this happens but they did use this effect in the Middle Ages to give stained glass three-dimensionality in the cathedrals so that the parishioners hallucinated with Biblical passages in 3D.
