China equips lava tube to simulate lunar caves

Souce

And tests are being carried out with a robot in a dark, cold and unused tunnel that imitates the lava tubes of the moon, these are ideal places to protect bases from radiation, China has just completed a simulated lunar underground space in a volcanic cavern near Lake Jingbo, creating a real scenario to test robotic exploration where light does not reach.

Researchers mapped and adapted a lava grotto as a test bed for navigation, perception and autonomous operation. Teams installed seismographs at the site to generate data references and train procedures that will be useful in future missions, including Changa 7 planned for 2026 at the lunar south pole, which will carry a seismograph to study lunar earthquakes.

Experimental robots are already operating in the environment, executing autonomous driving and multifunctional operations, teams report greater adaptability in relation to traditional vehicles when the terrain is irregular and narrow, there is now a continuous testing platform that connects perception algorithms, decision with real tasks, enter, map, return safely and seismic data for calibration.

Lava tubes are galleries formed by ancient volcanic flows, on the Moon they can offer natural shelter against radiation and thermal variations using a geomorphologically similar terrestrial lava cavern, robots train navigation, avoid obstacles, share maps and test routes, all autonomously, as they would do in a future underground habitat.

This is exciting progress! Using lava tubes on Earth to simulate lunar caves is a smart way to prepare robots for real missions. Training them to navigate, adapt, and collect seismic data will be vital for future Moon exploration.
